Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, July 8, 2004 Local wrestler wins national title it. - -9 :. ( 'A -- s 12 Never before has a local Springville wrestler won a national na-tional title in the sport. In fact it's a rare thing in any sport or competition, but 4.0 student Jason Ja-son Chamberlain of Springville traveled to Wisconsin last week and won a national title in the Greco Roman Tournament. Chamberlain competed in the USA Wrestling Kids National Finals where he wrestled in both the Greco Roman and Freestyle. "It is something I have worked very hard for" said Chamberlain "and it was definitely defi-nitely worth it". It was Jason's 14th birthday to boot. Getting a gold medal in a national event is about as good of a birthday present a young man can get. Friday and Saturday he competed com-peted in the freestyle tournament tourna-ment and came away with a silver sil-ver medal in that tournament. "Nothing to be ashamed of," said his father and long time coach at Springville Junior High. Kent has been coaching Jason in wrestling since he was about seven years old. In order to compete in the national na-tional tournament you first have to place in the state tournament tour-nament and then in at region. Jason won the state finals handily back in April of this year just a few weeks after recovering re-covering from a broken knee in a match against a Spanish Fork rival. The state tournament qualified him to compete in the western regional tournament two weeks ago in Winnemuc-ca, Winnemuc-ca, Nevada. "Jason was only scored on one time in the entire six days of wrestling" said one of Jason's Ja-son's Coaches, Craig LaMont. "He came away with two gold medals in that tournament. Wrestlers who qualify at any of the five regional championships are eligible to compete at the national tournament. It is difficult diffi-cult enough just to get to nationals na-tionals and much more so to win the entire championship." LaMont went on to say, "He is one of the best wrestlers in the entire nation right now and we are excited to have him on the high school team next year as a freshman. Many area high school coaches believe Jason could be a four-time state champion cham-pion in Utah". Equally impressed was Head Springville High Wrestling Coach Justin Judkins who was reviewing Jason's video-tape within a few hours of his return from Wisconsin. "He is going to be very hard to beat next year," was coach Judkins remark. re-mark. Coach LaMont is the Director of Kids Wrestling for the entire state of Utah. He said that Utah sent nine wrestlers back to nationals. na-tionals. Of those nine, Jason was the only Greco-Roman Champion. Two other Utah wrestlers won the gold in Freestyle. Matthew Brown of West Valley Val-ley City (will also be a freshman fresh-man at Cyprus High next year) and Carson Kuhn from Sandy both won national titles. Other all Americans from Utah were Matthew Fairbroth-er Fairbroth-er of Murray who placed second sec-ond place in both styles and Brandon George of Riverton who placed 4th place in Greco." Another famous Utah wrestler is about to showcase his skills on an international level. NCAA stand-out Cael Sanderson will be representing our country in the summer Olympics coming up soon. We are all pulling for him to bring home the gold too. To follow fol-low Cael and other Olympic wrestling updates, fans can log on to usawrestling.org.
