Good health habits begin at early age You're almost never too young to begin the good lifestyle habits that may help you avoid a heart attack or stroke in later years. "Too many of us think of stroke and heart disease as health problems that affect only the elderly," says Jeffrey Jef-frey Anderson, M.D., president presi-dent of the American Heart Association, Utah Division. "But we have conclusive proof now that this is not true. One study released by the American Heart Association Associa-tion in March 2001 shows that bad habits and other risk factors can begin the process of atherosclerosis in adolescents adoles-cents as young as 15 years old." Additional research shows that a diet low in saturated-fat, saturated-fat, that avoids animals fats, hydrogenated oils and trans-fatty trans-fatty acids together with adequate activity and smoking smok-ing avoidance can delay or prevent atherosclerosis and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. But now scientists understand that this is as true for children as it is for adults. Until age 2, infants have a nutritional need for more fat than older children or adults. But beyond that age, they gain the same health benefits as anyone else from reducing the saturated fat in their diet.
