Show r Suicide m iot. 1 isiife New Year In 2002, 23 Utahns lost their lives in the month of December alone due, to traffic traf-fic related crashes. The 2004 New Year holiday period begins at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Wednes-day, Dec. 31, 2003 and ends at 11:50, Sunday, Jan. 4, 2(304. The Utah Safety Council Coun-cil estimates that 5 people may die in traffic crashes over this holiday weekend. Seat belt use has risen to 85 percent in Utah and thousands thou-sands of lives have been saved as a result. But this means that 15 percent of alj Utah vehicle occupants are still not buckled up and the excuses seem absurd in the face of the statistics. The tragic aspect of this statistic is that the 15 percent represents repre-sents a large number of individuals being killed in Utah traffic crashes. The vast majority of drivers and passengers pas-sengers killed in crashes were unbelted. Seat belts save lives and help prevent serious, disabling injuries. Besides wearing your seat belt, there are other things you can do to ensure safe and happy holiday travel. Hit the Road Carefully - Allow extra time. Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to travel to your destinations. - Buckle everybody up. Before you depart, everyone should be properly restrained. re-strained. Children under age 12 should travel in the back seat in an age appropriate child safety restraint. - Make sure your vehicle is visible. Remove all snow and ice from the front and rear windshields, headlights and taillights before you drive off. - Slow down and spread out. The three-second rule can help you establish safe following distances at any speed. On icy roads, in heavy snowfall or in dense traffic, you'll need to slow down and double or even triple the three-second count to create a buffer zone. - Do not drink and drive. Convince friends to stay overnight, ride with someone else or call a taxi for them. Also, be aware of other drivers who may have had too much to drink. Alcohol-impaired Alcohol-impaired drivers drive at inconsistent speeds, change lanes frequently, disregard traffic signs and drive outside of lane markers. Plan Ahead for Safety - Schedule a preseason checkup. Ask a full-service mechanic to check your car's battery and check or change January 1, 2004 - The Springville Herald - Page Eleven the oil and antifreeze. The brakes, exhaust system, heater, defroster, hoses and belts should also be inspected. inspect-ed. , - Get a grip. Brand-new all-season or snow tires will perform better than tires that are nearing their limit of reliable tread wear. It's equally. important to maintain the air pressure listed by the vehicle owner's manual. - Watch the weather. Tune in to radio or television broadcasts for weather- and traffic news. - Assemble an emergency kit. Your emergency kit should include: warm clothing, cloth-ing, ice scraper, flashlight, flares, jumper cables, blankets, blan-kets, snow shovel, water and energy bars. Following these safety precautions can help you steer clear of winter driving hazards and enjoy a safe happy holiday season. The Code of Hammurabi, a collection of Babylonian laws of the 1700s B.C., included a form of credit' insurance. A borrower did not have to repay a loan if personal misfortune made it impossible to do so. The borrower paid an extra amount for this protection in addition to the interest.
