Bone mineral density test now at ML View Doctors can now predict bone fractures thanks to a specialized x-ray called a bone mineral density test performed at Mountain View Hospital (MVH) in Payson. The simple, 20-minute exam measures calcium in the bones and monitors bone strength thus allowing physicians physi-cians to predict painful fractures frac-tures and prevent them. "We live in an amazing time where medicines are available avail-able to strengthen bone," said Dr. Stanley Green, radiologist radiolo-gist practicing at MVH. , "Even with modern medicines, medi-cines, it takes years to put bone density back. The bone density test lets us look at patients beforehand who may have a predisposition to osteoporosis and start them on a regimen to minimize their risks of multiple fractures," frac-tures," Mature people can avoid the symptoms of osteoporosis such as loss of height, a protruding hump in the upper back and painful fractures with early detection and intervention. "We'd like to see patients early when bone loss is preventable rather than go back and treat the problem," said Green. Most patients Green sees for the exam are in their 70s. He suggests people in their 60s and 50s should consider having a bone density exam. Like mammograms, bone . density exams are self-referring. Patients do not need a doctor's order to have the test performed. If a patient refers himself or herself for the exam and something abnormal is found, Green and his colleagues refer "S, is-- fx ) in lotte England, 9-10:15 a.m.; "Mormon Literature" taught by Dr. Richard Cracroft, 10:30-11:45; "Shakespeare" taught by Tobe Atwood, 3:30-4:45. Films of the plays will be shown at the Orem Public Library. Thursdays: "The World and I" taught by Dr. ,Weldon Moffitt, 2:25-3:30 2:25-3:30 p.m.; "Music Appreciation" Apprecia-tion" taught by Dr. Ralph Woodward, 3:45-5. Fridays: "Great Moments in American Theater" taught by Dr. Richard Rasmussen, 2-3:30 p.m.. Saturday, Oct. 11, is a tour of the SLC Cathedrals. Cost is $30. Registration and pre-pay ment is necessary. Call Ernest at 863-8398 for further information. infor-mation. Visa and Mastercard can be taken over the phone. Meet at northwest corner of UVSC campus They leave promptly at 8:30 a.m.; return about 5. Wear walking shoes. New members ages 55 to 98 are always welcome. Elder Quest functions on a Fall and Spring semester basis. himher to their physician. Medicare covers bone density exams every ' two years. However, if a patient has a family predisposition to osteoporosis, testing should be conducted more frequent- iy. "I cannot emphasize enough how valuable bone density testing is as a preventative preven-tative tool," said Green. Green would like to ' see people consider bone density testing a routine preventative test like mammograms. "We are saving more lives today because women are aware of mammography and consider it a routine healthy lifestyle component. Bone density testing is similar in that early testing can help prevent undue pain and suffering caused from fractures and the effects of osteoporosis. I'm seeing too many who have fractures. There is a treatment." treat-ment." "Bone density testing is part of the many diagnostic capabilities we have at MVH to meet the healthcare needs of our community," said Jo Burt, chief clinical officer. Green suggests participating participat-ing in a weight-bearing exercise exer-cise to help reduce the chances chanc-es of osteoporosis . "Just walking is not good enough. Carry a couple of cans of soup in your pockets for weight," said Green. He also emphasizes eating foods that are high in calcium and magnesium.
