Show Page Eight - The Springville Herald - March 5, 2003 ; . Hockey;: Last Thursday night at the Cottonwood Recreation Center the Springville Varsity Varsi-ty Ice Hockey team took on the Layton Lancers in the Utah High School Hockey Invitational Tournament opener. The Red Devils suffers a 2-1 defeat to the Lancers earlier in the season and Springville was grateful for the opportunity to atone for that poorly played game. The Lancers dominated the game for all three periods of play and kept Springville from gaining any sort of momentum the entire game. Springville lost their discipline disci-pline and chased the puck and Layton's players around the ice the entire game. Layton, to their credit, played better than they had in the first match against Springville Sprin-gville and never allowed Springville in the game. . Springville did enjoy a few bright spots with another stellar performance turned in by goaltender Josh Wheeler. Springville's two goals were scored by the outstanding individual efforts of Danny lee and Adam Bernier. Bernier was chosen as the coach's Player of the Game for his continued offensive prowess and his goal. Adam carried the puck from end to end and never gave up until the puck was in Layton's net. Springville's coaches thank the senior players that have shone throughout this season with their improved play, leadership and outstanding out-standing attitudes. The Devils were hoping to come out with a victory and keep the Lions out of the. state tournament. As the first quarter got under way the Devils came out excited and ready for action. By the end of the quarter the Devils had managed to hold the Lions to only 16 points; unfortunately the Lions held the Devils to only 14 of their own points. Trying to regain energy in the second quarter, Coach Knapp called upon juniors Jimmy Carrey, Peter Munk, Alex Thorson and Ben Hanks, to bring the Devils back into the game. Each one contributed with a bucket or two, but by the end of the quarter the Devils found themselves down by eight going into the half. Determined to bring the Devils back into the game, senior Brett Munson exploded explod-ed in the third, scoring seven of the Devils' seventeen third quarter points. The Lions continued to try and pull away, but the Devils wouldn't would-n't give up, nipping right at the Lions' heels. By the end of the third the Devils still trailed 54-47. The fourth quarter was all about Glen Young and Richard Rich-ard Bird, who between the two of them, scored thirteen of the Devils' eighteen, fourth quarter points. Nevertheless, Never-theless, the Lions scored thirty, fourth quarter points, which again ended the game with the Devils in defeat.
