Swimming in the seven-year-old division. Vaughan won four of five events and had personal-record personal-record times in all five. Porter sped to three firsts and a second in four events against his fellow 11 -year-olds. Vaughan's time drops were stunning, especially considering he swam only 25 years in three of his races. The focused Springville swimmer swim-mer also bested his previous marks in the 50 freestyle (39.98) and 100 intermediate medley (1:44.98). Portor won the 50 back (PR 43.94), the 50 breast (PR44.49) and the 50 free (35.65). He also placed second in the 100 IM with a lifetime best of 1:30.94. The restriction order took effect on July 8, and remain in effect until rescinded. "This is a necessary precaution precau-tion due to the extremely dry conditions and volatility of vegetation vege-tation throughout the state," explained Governor Leavitt. "This is an interagency agreement agree-ment with our federal partners, the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and National Nation-al Park Service, that open fires of any kind must be prohibited at this time." This order does not restrict the use of propane or gas stoves, but does prohibit the use of charcoal char-coal briquettes, as well as any other solid fuels. Other activities prohibited include: - Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or an area three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared to mineral soil. - Discharging or use of any type of fireworks, tracer ammunition ammuni-tion or other pyrotechnic device. Additional restrictions are in force in the southwest corner of the state, which prohibit operating operat-ing a chainsaw or motorized equipment, blasting, welding or other activities that generate flame or flammable, material or operating a motorized vehicle off designated roads or trails from 1 p.m. until 1 a.m. each day. Health notes You know it's important to do some stretching to warm up your muscles before a work-out-it helps reduce muscle soreness. Now researchers say Vitamin E can also be an important weapon in the battle against post-workout pain. Scientists studied 32 adult male volunteers, half of whom took 1000 IU of vitamin E every day for three months while the other half took a placebo. At the end of the three months the men were asked to run downhill for 45 minutes. The men who took placebos reported soreness, while those who took vitamin E every day said they had little pain. And muscle tests showed the volunteers volun-teers taking the vitamin also experienced less muscle damage. While more research needs to be done, study directors say taking E for a week before a long hike or ski trip couldn't hurt. Vitamin E also appears to provide protection against Alzheimer's Alzhe-imer's disease. Two studies-one from Europe and the other from the U.S.-found that people who ate diets rich in vitamin E were 70 percent less likely to develop the disease. If such research pans out, it suggests that eating whole grains, vegetables and fruits may offer a hedge against developing jur iuw izfl prices say f- H it best! y www.smithsfords.net 4rtMBHMt'''t''taa tvm m m '" "Will ll Last month these five young men represented Springville well in the Down Under Bowl on the Gold Coast of Australia.
