The concert, part of the last big event of Art City Days, will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Spring Acres Arts Park, 620 S. 1350 East (northeast of Springville High School). Seating will be available or those attending may bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to set on the grass. The band will be followed by a free performance by magician Timothy Riggs at 9 p.m. and the largest fireworks show ever staged in Springville set to music at 10 p.m. The Utah Premiere Brass is a British-style brass band that was formed in the year 2000 in an effort to revive a musical genre that played an important role in Utah's early history. During the Industrial Revolution in England, owners of factories, mills and mines sponsored brass bands as a way to keep their workers out of political mischief during their leisure time. These bands became the pride and joy of every community, and competition became fierce to see which town had the best band. The artistic level of brass bands skyrocketed. When British converts of the LDS church journeyed across the ocean and plains to Utah, they brought with them their carefully-packed instruments and the brass band tradition. As happened in England, these community bands in Utah became a source of entertainment, artistic expression, and community spirit. At the turn of the 20th century, over 100 brass bands performed throughout the state. Today there are only two. Like their earlier counterparts, the 36 members of the Utah Premiere Brass are volunteers from all walks of life - such as professional musicians, homemakers, computer programmers, college professors, and business executives - and hail from Davis County to Sanpete County. Using a modern, versatile approach, UPB is a superb medium for playing all types of music including symphonic repertoire, marches, virtuoso solos, and transcriptions of film music, overtures, orchestral classics, and jazz. UPB is capable of fortissimos that raise the roof and pianissimos that are barely audible, and their unique instrumentation allows for a fascinating palette of tonal colorings. Artistic director Alan Boyer is known for his rapport with the audience, which makes for an appealing and somewhat unorthodox concert experience. He began his musical career on the cornet at the age of 1 1 in the English coal-mining town of South Elnsall, near Leeds. Two years later, he landed a coveted position in the cornet section of his town's brass band. He went on to conduct and play with many of the top brass bands in Europe. In 1998 Boyer moved to Utah with his wife, Anne, principal cornet of Utah Premiere Brass, and his son, James, a trombonist and percussionist. Boyer works as a consultant Chief Operating Officer for Crescent School of Music in American Fork. The school provides private and ensemble music instruction to students and adults and has locations throughout Utah. Boyer also owns his own business in Financial Services, helping families and businesses plan and deploy their financial lifestyle strategies. " For Utah Premiere Brass, his objectives are clear.-; "Makes it good and then make1 it betted" He fully believes in entertaining an audience, and through entertainment, people . will become better educated about music in general and the brass band in particular.
