Show Page Two - The Springville Herald EDITORIAL it invol Only 20 percent of the registered voters in Springville showed up to vote last week in the city election. A very poor showing. What happened to the patriotism that oozed fiom our pores just a few short weeks ago? It is your duty to vote. No excuses! If you don't vote, you don't have much right to complain about what is happening in the city-Springville or Mapleton. Your vote last week could have a whole lot to do with the quality of life we have in a few years. When we vote, we show appreciation for our freedoms and democracy. How will your life be affected by those who were elected? Are you upset by the amount of growth in our community? Do you get testy over traffic problems? Are you bothered by the condition of the streets? Does crime concern you? If you didn't vote, you can still take part in city politics. Springville City Council meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The meetings are open to the public. If you want to see how the mayor and city council members conduct city business, go to a council meeting. If you want to speak about any item that is on the council agenda, you can sign up to make comments or ask questions. The agenda for each council meeting is always posted on the city bulletin board at the city offices. A notice of all public hearings is always published in this newspaper. If you have a computer, you can view the agenda on the city's web page at www.springville.org. The Springville Planning Commission meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. They conduct business dealing with planning for the residential and commercial future of the city. This body is made up entirely of volunteers. If you have an interest in planning for Springville's future, you may attend those meetings. You might even volunteer to be a member of the commission or some other body in the city. The city also has a Utility Board. It is made up of city council members, citizens and business owners who meet regularly to discuss and make recommendations on the city's current and future power, water, sewer and other utility needs. They meet at 6 a.m. Citizens are welcome to attend. Don't complain about who got elected and what they are doing if you didn't vote or do not get involved in the city in any way. Remember what Winston Churchill said: "At the bottom of all the tributes paid to democracy is the little man walking into the little booth with a little pencil, making a little cross on a little bit of paper. No amount of rhetoric or voluminous discussion can possibly diminish the overwhelming importance of that point." Where were all the voters? Editor: Turnout for the November election in Springville was shamefully sham-efully low with only about one of every five eligible voters casting a ballot. I realize that this was an "off-year" election with few candidates to choose from, but the same pattern has been evident in other elections where many positions at higher levels of government were at stake. I realize, it is too much to hope for to get a 100 turnout, but with the polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. we can (and should) do far better, especially when we are riding a wave of national patriotism by displaying the American flag, singing "God Bless America," and wearing bumper stickers that ask God to bless America. As one of the judges at that recent election, however, I did see something that made my heart swell with vicarious pride for a large number of people who could easily have excused themselves them-selves from the obligation of voting. I speak of the relatively large number of aged, inform and disabled individuals who demonstrated demon-strated quite clearly how much the opportunity to vote meant to them. I saw a remarkable number of people who "more than selves their country loved" by overcoming overcom-ing severe physical handicaps to do their civic duty, and I simply (USPS 5 13-060) Published Weekly by Art City Publishing Co., Inc. 161 South Main Street Springville, Utah Publisher Martin W. Open Letter to the Citizens of Mapleton: The registered voters of Mapleton Map-leton deserve a pat on the back It is my understanding that there are some 3000 registered voters, in the city and nearly 1400 voted in the general election. If that is the case then we had hear 50 voting in this year's election. I commend the candidates for the way they run their campaigns in a spirited and ethical manner. This was the case in the primary election as well. ebo.mof Dnrak Editor: On July 1 1 , 2001 , the Springville Spring-ville Herald ran an Editorial authored by one, Brinton Wilk-ins, Wilk-ins, entitled "Education?". The editorial started with the following follow-ing Questions and Answers: "Question: What do George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton and Abraham Lincoln t have in common with Marilyn 4 Monroe? sY Answer: Almost nothing... noth-ing... except the title 'American.' Question: What does Marilyn , Monroe have (aside from her checkered personal life, alcohol and drug problems, and question-, able talent) that those men don't? Answer: More attention in high school history courses." I was incensed! I did not believe there was any truth to the ! foregoing, but as one of those responsible for what is taught to our young people, I needed to . know. It had previously been,' alleged by some that the books , were not teaching the real history of our great nation. I pledge my best efforts in representing you for the next four years and invited you to attend City Council meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. At the end of each meeting, community members mem-bers are invited to ,sign up to speak before the council on subjects sub-jects of concern. There are a lot of challenges facing Springville during this the first decade of the 21st Century. However, we all know what a great community we .live in, and its greatest asset is the citizens who are so generous with their time and talents. There are many tough Issues facing our city but none that all of us working together cannot textbooks available. I wanted to check for myself. I soon had on my desk the three volumes from which history is taught in Nebo School District. They are: "The American Journey," Jour-ney," "History of a Free Nation" and "World History." The formidable formi-dable task of reading the 2852 pages contained in the three books was begun. Originally my intent was to scan the books and just read certain sections. After, doing that on "World History," I started on "History of a Free Nation." The reading was so interesting that I found myself reading every page and thorough"-ly thorough"-ly enjoying it. Knowing that it would be Christmas before finishing at that rate, I decided that I needed help. Lorraine Morin, one of the mothers moth-ers in our district, volunteered to help. She started with the "American "Amer-ican Journey" and a review of "World History." We have finished our review and would like to report that we have learned: 1 To the first allegation that Marilyn Monroe is given more attention than the Founding Fathers Fa-thers in our history books! There were 39 pages on Thomas Jefferson, Jeffer-son, 17 pages on Benjamin Franklin, Fran-klin, 24 pages on Alexander Hamilton, and for Abraham Lincoln portions of 40 pages. In "History of a Free Nation" it was a similar story-Washington 42 pages, Jefferson 45, Franklin 12, Hamilton 27 and Lincoln 32. Brinton Wilkin's EDITORIAL also referred to the need to study John Locke's "Essay on the . Rights of Man" and Montesquieu's Montesqu-ieu's the "Spirit of the Laws." In our study of the history books, we found these men referred to in all three books on three separate occasions. (Still no mention of M.M.) It is often easy to criticize what we don't know about or worse yet, to infer that what is happening in "New York Schools" is also happening in Nebo School District and come to a very erroneous conclusion. Recently . an article in a local newspaper implied that our students stu-dents are not being taught to read and ripping on it. The real reason that we have the mascot of the Red Devil goes back to when the first high school was built. It has to do with the FOUNDATION of the school. It has been given to the school by a loyal Springville resident and has been ' nicely framed to display in our school. Maybe that will help you out in understanding why we are called the Red Devils. To all who support the Red Devils (and our mascot), thank you. I know to me it means a lot to come from Springville and be ' a Red Devil. Not because of the so called evil factor that everyone states comes with the name, but because it is the FOUNDATION Maybe he needs to slow down and smell the roses.
