Show Page Four - The Springville Herald wo in "lies Miseries" When the Broadway company producing "Les ' Miserables" opens its three-week run at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake next week, the city of Springville has reason to be proud as two of the four Utahns with the national touring company's cast of 38 have firm roots here. Three of the four parents of these girls were raised in Springville. Their daughters are Mindy Smoot, who is understudy for Eponine and Alison Fidel who plays young Cosette. Mindy is the youngest daughter daugh-ter of Doug and Marian Bird Smoot, now of Provo, and the granddaughter of the late Maurice and Mary Bird and Douglas P. and Jennie Smoot. She was selected se-lected for these roles in Salt Lake City and has been traveling with the company since December 1 of last year. For her, performing with this 10th National Tour of "Les Miserables" is a dream come true. Starting at age four, Mindy has been singing continuously. In June of 1997 she signed with Walt Disney Dis-ney World, appearing in productions produc-tions in Orlando. As a performer, Smoot toured the United States and Africa with BYU Young Ambassadors and is presently pursuing a BFA Degree from Brigham Young University. Mindy's first audition with the Broadway company Magic Works casting for "Les Miserables" was at age 16 in Salt Lake City, where they were impressed with her talent and later invited her to audition in San Francisco at the age of 18 where they were again impressed. At age 19 she had a private audition with the New York Company in Salt Lake City. She was a sophomore at BYU carrying 18 hours and a vocal instructor for 20 students when the call came from New York to be in Toronto with one week to prepare. That was Dec. 1, 1998. A dream come true for Mindy who had been singing "On My Own" since she was twelve. She will perform the role of Eponine on November 19 and will be excited to have over 200 of closest clos-est friends and family in the audience. Alison, who turned eight in May, was selected from auditions throughout through-out the country and has been performing with the National Company for about six months. Although her home is in Murray, she fell in love with theatre at age four here in Springville in the Villa Theatre production of "Annie" "An-nie" where she might be remembered remem-bered by theatre patrons as the tiny orphan who tried, many times without success, to keep out of the way of flying mops and brooms. From there Alison, who has never experienced stage fright, won the role of Gretl in "The Sound of Music" at the Grand Theatre in Salt Lake City. In addition, with her two sisters in the casts, she has performed the role of Molly, the youngest orphan or-phan in all or revue segments of "Annie" three times and also in "Brigadoon." Alie has also recorded radio commercials and had just landed the role of Maudie in a Salt Lake Hale Centre Theatre production of "April Ann" when the call came from New York that she was wanted for "Les Miserables." Miserab-les." Her parents are Steve and Melia Woodfield Fidel and her Virginia Law to j celebrate birthday Virginia Boyer Law will celebrate her 80th birthday on Sunday, November 14, 1999. Virginia was born November 14, 1919, in Springville, Utah, to Myron Oscar and Clara Guymon Boyer. She was raised in Springville Spring-ville with her two brothers and three sisters. Genevieve and Marjorie now live in Salt Lake, Stanley in Springville. (Francis died in 1989, Elaine in 1998, Virginia's father in 1977, her mother in 1985.) She married her high school sweetheart, Glen Arthur Law, on New Year's Day, 1940, and was later sealed to him, along with their children, in the Manti Temple. Tem-ple. Glen is probably remembered remem-bered most by Springville people for his musical talents and love for music. He djed in 1985. Virginia has eight children: Judy, Dyanne, Ron, David and Debbie of Springville; Kerry, Salt Lake; and Lorraine, Orem. Robert, her last child, lived one day and died in 1959. She has 23 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, she and her surviving sur-viving posterity now number 49. She is pleased that four of her children and seven of her grandchildren grand-children have served or are serving serv-ing as missionaries. Virginia served as a family history missionary from 1996 and 1998. She worked mostly in the Granite Mountain Vault. Since about 1980 she has served in the name extraction program, preparing prepar-ing many thousands of names for temple work. Her family and friends remember re-member her as always serving someone somewhere. She has enjoyed trips to Yellowstone Park, Disneyland, the Grand Canyon, Israel and Egypt and a tour of church history and national nation-al history sites in the East. She refers to her family as "her pride and joy" saying, : "What else is there?" Her family says she had forbidden them to cook up any public hoopla about her birthdays until she turns 90 (although they do swear that she really does act like she enjoys big family get-togethers). X: .if Hugh and Erma Mendenhall Hjorth of Mapleton celebrated their sivtipth weridino anniversary on November 1. 1999. A large family dinner was held in their honor to celebrate the longevity of their union. Their children are: Calvin and Marie Hjorth, Suzanne and Kenneth Hughes, Terry and Connie Hjorth, Eldon and Susan Hjorth, Mary and Jim Fojtek, Eileen Hjorth, Richard and Karla Hjorth, Nancy and Frank Carter, Carol and Jim Franklin, Kris and Mark Matheson and Cynthia and Blair Parrish. They have 45 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Ninty-five years! Mae Miner, former resident of Fairview, celebrated her 95th birthday with family and friends Nov. 6, 1999 at an open house held in her honor at her home. She is currently living with her daughter, Marilyn Lund, in Mapleton. She has lived for nearly a century and has seen many amazing amaz-ing things in her life including the invention of electricity, indoor in-door plumbing, cars, telephones, radio, television, space travel and computers. She has held many callings and positions in her church and community and raised a large family of seven children. Through it all she has always been there offering a hug, a smile, comforting word or even a favorite cookie or candy. No matter what was needed, she has always done whatever she could to help. She currently has 28 grandchildren, grand-children, 69 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
