Fish will deliver the concluding lecture on "The Early History of Iron and Steel Production Produc-tion in Utah County" in the 1999 lecture series sponsored by the Springville Historical Society tonight, Wed., May 26, in the Council Chambers at the Springville Spring-ville Civic Center, 50 S. Valley State College, researching a two-volume biography of George Q. Cannon and an economic eco-nomic history of Geneva Steel. It was in 1924 that successful iron production began in Utah. It was in this year that iron was cast for the first time from the Ironton Plant of Columbia Steel Corporation, two miles north of Springville, later named Ironton, Utah: Southern Utah iron ore, . limestone and dolomite from nearby deposits and coke made from Utah coals, were used to make iron primarily for the open hearth furnaces in Torrance and .Pittsburg, California.
