Show Page Fourteen - The Springville Herald - Mayy5, 1999 Service matters Cteif odd volunteer? by Susan Roberts "I could just sit down and do nothing and I would be totally-I'd totally-I'd get old, and I don't want to," says Velma Taylor, who lives on Center Street in Springville. She raised her family here and her husband is buried in the Springville Springv-ille Cemetery. For the past 12 years or so, she has worked Women, Infants and Children (WIC) in Provo, but the part-time job got to be too much and last year she retired. Velma, however, missed her job and wasn't ready to get old. About November of last year she volunteered to tutor children at Grant Elementary. She goes twice a week for an hour each time. . "I don't profess to be a good reader or a good teacher," but Velma says volunteering gets her out of the house and meeting people. Several of her friends are already at the elementary school. Besides, the children need her and are making progress. "The children seem to like me and are eager to come," she says. One girl even went looking for her when Velma missed a day. Lynda Golding isn't ready to retire, but she is no stranger to volunteering. Presently she spends a minimum of four, 12-hour 12-hour days a month on call with the Springville Ambulance team. "I've always been interested in first aid and safety," said Lynda. She has a recreational management degree and 23 years of practical leadership experience in organized (and sometime not-so-organized) camping. (Ask her about caning fish the family caught... over a camper stove in Baja California.) Lynda has taught water safety and life saving, sav-ing, but wanted to know and do more. All ambulance volunteers must take the ten-week (120 hours) Emergency Medical Technicians Tech-nicians (EMT) Basic Course and then pass the state practical and written exam. Springville's Fire Chief, Phil Whitney can give details to anyone interested in this kind of service. EMT training is a huge commitment, but there are other valuable courses offered in the Springville community. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training is one such class, meeting one night a week for seven weeks. Community members are instructed in-structed how to give aid and survive in the event of a community commu-nity disaster. Gary White, owner of Clear Springs Pool and Spa, took this class last year. Being a scout leader, Gary was already familiar with emergency responses and disasters, but now he is also the CERT leader of Sector Two. Springville is organized into six sectors to facilitate emergency communication and response. If Springville has a large chemical spill, earthquake, flood or other disaster that is too widespread for city employees to handle alone, CERT members are called into action. They secure their own family, check their neighbors and make their way to the staging area where they will be in communication com-munication with Police Chief Scott Finlayson. Emily Dickinson wrote, Entertainers needed for Art City Days Singers, dancers, musicians and entertainers of all types are being sought to perform during a program of outdoor entertainment following the Grand Parade on June 12 during Art City Days. Local performers of all ages are encouraged to participate. The entertainment will be performed per-formed at the Springville Civic Center Park, 50 S. Main. Time slots from 15 to 30 minutes will be available from noon to 7 p.m. A sound system and stage will be provided and an electronic keyboard will be available. For' more information or to schedule a time, call Shauna Johnson at you "They may not need me, yet their might..." There is no might about being needed. People need help and all kinds of volunteers are needed. All ages. All situations. Everyone can do something. In turn, everyone needs to give service. Studies suggest that giving personal service where this is interaction with others can result in beneficial health gains the same as physical exercise or stress management techniques. Most volunteers would agree their heart increases its capacity when service is given regularly. Art City yard sale The second annual yard sale for Art City Elementary's Orchestra Or-chestra will be on Saturday, May 8, from 8:30 to 2 p.m. at Art City School, 121 N. 900 East. The yard sale last year was a huge success paying most of the cost of starting up the orchestra and paying for the orchestra teacher. The school needs the same kind of success this year so that they can have an orchestra next year. The school appreciates the support of the community. They need clothes, household items.... anything that will sell that's in good condition, brought to the school during school hours. They will take items up until May 7, but hope to get most things donated before May 1 to give time for sorting and pricing. Mapleton Fireman's Breakfast Citizens of the community are invited to attend the second annual Firemen's Breakfast in Mapleton on Sat., May 8; from 8 a.m. to noon at the Mapleton Fire Station, 35 E. Maple. Cost of the breakfast will be $2 per person or $10 per' family. There will also be a car wash sponsored by the Mapleton Fireman's Auxiliary. Come and eat your breakfast and get your car washed while you eat. Price for the car wash is $5 per car. Thanks to Reams for donating donat-ing the food. fpOOR CO |
