Sap CireeEc recognizes two for service to school The SpringvilleMapleton PTA Council met in January at the Sage Creek School and during dur-ing that meeting honored Barbara Franson for Excellence in Education Educa-tion and Marsha Rasmussen for Excellence in Service. Barbara Franson has written parts of the State Core for the Utah State Office of Education and worked at Sage Creek for the past six yearsa. Her professionalism professional-ism and concern for students are reflected by practices, policies and procedures which she has been influential in establishing and which have improved the quality of eduation at the school. To stay abreast of current math practices, she attends conferences con-ferences and workshops. Teachers Teach-ers in first and second grades have been teaching math concepts with "hands on" materials and activities because of what she has taught them. The huge project of organizing organiz-ing leveled books at Sage Creek was initiated by Barbara and has resulted in sets of leveled books in each classroom. Additional sets are also available for parents and teachers. The principles that Barbara used after receiving Reading Recovery Education, that teach and motivate students in reading, have also been observed and adopted by other teachers. She has also trained teachers in the district to integrate inquiry into the curriculum. In a partnership among Nebo District schools for improving methods for teaching spelling, reading math and other subjects, she has been a facilitator and team leader for second grades, as each grade level meets four or five times a year after school to discuss and share best practices in the classroom. The faculty's professional library at Sage Creek was set up by Barbara. Books and magazines are added to it each year. The PTA was pleased to commend Barbara for the influence influ-ence her attitude and zest for life't have had on her school, district,' and community. ' Marsha Rasmussen first got involved at Sage Creek in 1976. , She believed if she was involved in her children's classrooms it would encourage their learning and help them realize how important impor-tant education is. Since that time she has seen six children through the school, and she has been true to her commitment to become involved. Marsha has served as PTA President twice, and introduced the school to it's present mascot, the Sage Creek Dragon. She was also instrumental in seeing the school was recognized in the local newspaper. She has served on seven Parent Advisory Committees, two years a Health Commissioner, one as room mother supervisor, one as Reflections chairman and two as chairman of the Halloween Hallow-een Carnival. She has served numerous times as room mother. She has decorated many teachers rooms and was most recently responsible for the Christmas decorations in the school's main fininn rtallin Comfortable foyer. While serving five years on the City Soccer Committee, she helped bring soccer fields to Sage Creek. Marsha served on the accreditation accredi-tation team and implemented a Parent-Teacher Math Lab with math games the teachers could use in their classrooms or parents could check out to play with their children. One year she built a wooden mobile store that the teachers could take to their rooms when they had money activities. Another was a math bulletin board contest. The bulletin board was located in the main lobby and changed weekly. The classrooms class-rooms with the highest totals of right answers won a math game for their classroom. The prizes were wooden board games she made which promoted strategy" skills and logical reasoning.
