The students are offered three different scenarios in which they are attacked by the instructors instruc-tors and they defend themselves using the techniques they have learned in the course. The instructors are police officers, including some BYU police. "They help me when I have a class and I help them when they have a class," Foster said. Debbie Allred, a teacher at : Springville High School, took the : class last April along with her : drill team. "I learned some things I didn't know about protecting myself," Allred said. Foster taught Allred and her students various techniques of ' protecting themselves in case of an attack. The techniques included includ-ed getting out of different strongholds strong-holds from the front and from the back, Allred said. Foster also . taught the girls several kicks. : "He always emphasized that it was for protection only and it was not to be abused," she said. Foster has taught about five or six classes in Springville. The average size of a class includes between six and ten people, Foster said. At the end of the course, Foster signs the manual, and the student is automatically given a life-time membership to the R.A.D. systems. This means that the member can attend a R.A.D. class wherever it is offered across the United States and there is no . additional charge. Foster explained that instructors instruc-tors of the R.A.D. courses are big advocates of practice. "We practice techniques over and over again." he said.
