There is no other door to knowledge than the door nature opens; there is no truth except the truths we discover in nature. -Luther Burbank by Keith C. Olsen Over the weekend and amid much fanfare, the National Volunteering Vol-unteering Summit in Philadelphia was kicked off. The national news media has begun an attempt to convince us that this idea of volunteering is the greatest thing to come along since hot sliced bread. The hype and drum beat that the media is trying to feed us would have us believe that volunteering volun-teering alone will save the children, chil-dren, balance the budget, end global warming, stop ozone depletion, bring peace to the world and bring on the millennium. millenni-um. Please do not misunderstand what I am trying to say. Doing something for someone without receiving any compensation is an important fact of life. Wonderful things happen when we volunteer to help our fellow man. Bams and cabins have been built; crops have been harvested; fences and roads have been repaired. The idea of one may helping another has permitted us to accomplish ac-complish things that we could not do by ourself. There is also a personal benefit, a wonderful lift to the spirit of the individual volunteering. But before we swallow the ideas put out by the news media hook line and sinker. It might be well to ask some questions and receive some answers. an-swers. 1. Is it the government's job to control our generosity? 2. Is the administration attempting to do an end run around the idea of smaller government by creation of new massive bureaucracy and entitlement designed to save the children? 3. Volunteering indicates indi-cates a freedom to volunteer or not volunteer. As the government begins to suggest and then demand de-mand our support, where will volunteering change from a free will action and become government govern-ment imposed community service? ser-vice? 4. What is the difference between government imposed community service and government govern-ment imposed involuntary servitude? TIME'WEATHEfWNFORMATION 423-2189 INFORMATION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS.
