Metcalf Felix prior to 1946. Margaret was the second child of a family of 11 born to Reese and Ann Luelen Llewellyn. Her father and mother were married five years before having children, of their own. Within that time the Ute Indians stole four children from the Corn Creek Tribe and sold one of them to Margaret's parents, who they raised to womanhood. wom-anhood. Alverret, her Indian, sister, was treated as one of their own, and was loved by her white brother and sisters. One time Alverret's Indian mother came to , get her. He shook the door and yelled, "Open door, open door!" , Her brothers held to her and cried, "Oh, Maggie, he'll kill . us," but she knew she'd have to obey him, so she opened the door. The Indian asked, "Where ; man?" she lied to him and said, ,'. "Out on the hill." He said "I want butter." She said, "John, go and get the butter." The Indian , prowled around the room looking under the furniture and into the cupboards. When he learned what John's name was he ordered him to go for some water, but Margaret Marga-ret put an arm around each boy and said, "John will not go for water." When the Indian decided to leave, he climbed on his horse . and ordered her to hand him the milk. She did so, but held it in such a way that he couldn't grab her. In 1885 he worked in a gold mine in Colorado with his brother-in-law, Joseph Vane. They had to cross a ravine each day to get to their work. One' day as.;they started, father, John Lafayette, said a voice which sounded like it might have been his father's, Hiram William Clark, told him not to cross the ravine that day. So he told Uncle Joe he was not going over that day. Uncle Joe thought he was crazy and was arguing about it when crash! A deep snow slide filled the ravine to a depth of 75 feet. Store William Jackson (Jack) Stewart Written from several histories: Anna Starr as dictated by John Wadsworth; one by Hannah Fried Davis and one by Pearl Starr as dictated by Mary Finley. Jack came to Springville in 1850 and brought a lot of trinkets to sell. He built a log cabin in the south end of town on Main Street where now the D&RDG Railroad crosses the street. (Written in 1942). The Stewart home was a long house and his store another log building. He carried everything every-thing in his tore from eggs to harnesses, he carried everything that was possible for a pioneer store. He traded anything he could possibly use or trade again. He took and sold poles, posts, firewood, hides, hay, scrap iron, grain, horses, mules, wagons, household furnishing, s fuel and groceries such as better, cheese and eggs. On his lot was also a stable, coops, granary and a long house, each faced east. . One time an old iron bell was :. C O v ' QL KiDtoKiD stolen from Stewart. He called a group of men and boys together and said, "I don't want to make an example of the person who stole the bell, but I know who took it. If he brings it back, I'll say nothing about it." The bell was returned. John Wadsworth was living in Stewart's home, a business man came through and noticed an ox hide on Jack's fence. He came in and said, "You have a good chance here to buy up all kinds of hides, don't you?" "Yes," replied Stewart, whereupon the man gave him a price list for calf, sheep, cow and other skins and bargained with him to buy some for him. One day later, three wagons were heard coming down the road. Stewart sent Wadsworth out to see if they were loaded with hides, and so they were. The owners were asked to come in to talk to Stewart. Stew-art. The men said they were taking their hides to Salt Lake. Stewart offered the information that the roads were muddy and asked them to let him handle their hides, and save them the long trip. The men were pleased and unloaded their hides. When they left, he said to Wadsworth, "I have made $300 on the three loads of hides." When Johnston's Army left Utah, they sold such things as wire, mules, blankets, nails, wagons, food supplies, etc. at sacrificing prices. Many men went to Salt Lake to buy up supplies. Jackson Stewart had $5,000 which he took to Salt Lake for purchasing some of this material. Two merchants, Jennings Jenn-ings who owned a store in Salt Lake, and Godsby, a liquor merchant, wished to prevent smaller merchants from visiting the sale, ' got Jackson Stewart inside and treated him to liquor till he was drunk enough that he failed to attend the sale, and he greatly regretted this failure. Jennings bought up 75,000 pounds of bacon at 34 cent a pound and resold it for 35 cents a pound. Stewart was heavy-set in build and always smoked a pipe. Wadsworth Wads-worth remembers how he used to sit on the porch of his store and smoke and ill flies with his cane. Parents and others tend to teach the "ideal" rather than the "real" about marriage and parenting. parent-ing. Youth will likely learn more from their parent of the same sex on how to function as a married person than from any other source. The parent of the opposite oppo-site sex is the next most likely source. People who marry young tend to be more immature and less prepared. Common problems such as financial stress, in-law difficulties and general childbear-ing childbear-ing problems tend to contribute to major disfunctioning rather than just new marriage adjustments. Females tend to be better prepared for marriage than males; however, females usually experience more . adjustment problems in beginning a marriage than males do.. Females do most of the teaching about marriage and parenting to their children. By age 40, about 91 percent of males and 92 percent of females fe-males will have married at least once. By age 40-44, 78 percent of males and 74 percent of females fe-males are currently married. By age 65, 4 percent of males and 5 percent of females have never married. It is important that parents do all they can to model appropriate appro-priate marriage behaviors. It has been wisely said, "more caught than taught.
