Show Page Eight - The Springville Herald - May 29, 1996 Centennial ! 1 Spirlnplll'e By Mark Dale Law I will return to Springville next week for the fiftieth anniversary anniver-sary of the Springville High School Class of 1946. Returning has made me think a lot about my hometown. I was born in Springville almost 68 years ago and lived close to the downtown area with my parents, Mark and Mable Law, who owned and worked a farm a few miles west of Main Street. We had a herd of cattle that spent summers up Hobble Creek Canyon and winters at the farm. I remember that not every family owned a car, not even one car, and there no such things as rollerblades, skateboards, TV's, microwaves, computers or the Internet. But there were some wonderful wonder-ful things about life in Springville when I was a boy. There was the fresh, cold spring water that didn't have chlorine or other additives in it. Almost every household had gardens of fresh vegetables and berries and orchards or-chards of fruits. I grew up thinking think-ing that was the way things were done. You didn't buy food, you grew it, and women would prepare pre-pare the food fresh for meals or can or freeze it for later. Most families had their own chickens who laid eggs for the family, plus pigs for slaughter, cows for milk and cattle for eating. I didn't know as a youth that Mayonnaise could be bought at a store. Mother always made ours as well as our butter, cottage cheese and bread. I was 12 years old before I ever had a sandwich on Wonder Bread. I look around now and realize that all over this country and the world, the basic health of most people is not as good as it was SO years ago or more. On our Springville Spr-ingville farms and home gardens there were no pesticides, our cows and cattle didn't eat con- Seminary honor roll The Springville Junior Seminary Semi-nary is very pleased to recognize the following 70 students who have earned the Seminary Honor Roll for the entire 1996-96 seminary semi-nary year. To be on the Seminary Honor Roll a student must earn an "A" for academics and an "H" for honor in citizenship. Congratulations Congrat-ulations on a job well done. What a difference recent years have made in growing up. We now have so much environmental pollution from factories, vehicles, etc. We have hazardous wastes from manufacturing, excessive toxins, free radicals and many other things caused by the industrial indus-trial society in which we live. Our lives have become hectic and stressful with both husbands and wives working. No longer do most people have their own gardens. We now eat fast and frozen foods. I have always been interested in health, but since having major health problems two years ago, it has become my favorite subject. I am coming to Springville June 6 through 10 to attend my reunion and will be staying at Mountain Springs Motel, 489-3641. 489-3641. After graduating from Springville High School, I graduated gradu-ated from the University of California Cali-fornia at Los Angeles, spent two years in the Army in Europe and worked as an airline employee and Sears executive. I would like to talk to my old friends in Springville Spr-ingville about health and the good old days. Please call me.
