Show Four - The Springville Herald - January 3, 1996 Family pictures by Laurel Brady Enid Green Waldholtz found too late that she should not hixt trusted her financial affairs her husband. I have no such worries. I used to do all the family bill paying, but Jim got worried whenever he looked in my checkbook and saw I hadn't written anything in the register for months at a time. I seldom bounced checks, but it made him very nervous and he finally convinced con-vinced me to turn over all the finances to him. Which is fine by me, since I don't do math. My husband is meticulous when it comes to accounting and has offered hopefully many times to sit me down and spend six or eight or 30 hours explaining our financial situation according to Quicken. After years of rejection, he still seems so crestfallen when I politely decline. Sometimes just to make him happy, I gaze in wonder at the computer screen or printouts he helpfully provides. Mostly, I just stay as far away as possible. No, I don't have to worry about trusting him with our financial finan-cial affairs. The question I should be asking myself is, should I trust him with my children? After all, this is the man who drove past rush hour traffic at well over 60 mph for 12 miles in the emergency lane of a Los Angeles freeway once when we needed to catch a plane. Maybe I would have felt better about it if he'd acted a little nervous. Instead, In-stead, he casually draped his arm out the window and acted like he did it all the time. I later found out he commuted for an entire year of law school in that lane. This is also the man who took our firstborn daughter to Chuck Norris and Rambo movies beginning begin-ning when she was three months old and I worked swing shifts. I think that might be a felony. And this is the man who stood right there and watched as Gra-mpa Gra-mpa Brady fed sausage and hash browns to our oldest at the age of six weeks. I KNOW that's a felony. This is also the man who spent several hours last 4th of July rigging the house with fire crackers as a little surprise for me when I got home from work. Did I mention not only did he allow the kids to watch the process, pro-cess, he actually taught them how to tie the little sticks of TNT or whatever to the refrigerator so they would explode when I opened it? And that he rigged every cupboard, bedroom door and toilet in the house with some type of barely legal device? At least I don't let him dress the kids any more. Not after I left him in charge once and he took our oldest daughter out in public at the age of almost four dressed in a size seven red dress with pink socks and orange tennis shoes. He was pretty proud of himself, and I should have at least complimented him on the fact she was wearing shoes. Once when I was ill and hospitalized, he brought all five kids up to see me. They didn't look too bad that time, thanks to the years of closely supervised practice he'd had in choosing JTrey Richard Witney, son of Trevor and Jessica Witney of Springville, turned one year old on December 27, 1995. His grandparents are Rick and Linda Witney of Springville, Tom and Beckie Daniels of Salem and the late Molli Daniels. Dan-iels. Great-grandparents are Gene Sumsion of Mapleton and the late Fawn Sumsion; Eugene and Shirlene Daniels of Maple-ton, Maple-ton, Frank and Ramona Witney of Springville and Mary Jo Robertson of Springville. I ' ' " ' ' : v " yr t 1 - politically correct clothing by then. But Jay, has unruly hair even on a good day. In spite of Jim's best efforts, there was still one large wad of hair sticking straight up out of the side of the youngster's head. I later found out I wasn't the first to comment on it. As Jim herded the crew into the elevator on their way in, two older ladies stepped in with them. One of the ladies brazenly studied Jay, then smiled helpfully helpful-ly at my husband, who was juggling jug-gling an infant in each arm. She pointed at Jay and noted as only a mother would, "It looks like somebody didn't get their hair combed today." The doors opened just then, and as he stopped off, Jim solemnly sol-emnly assured the lady, "Oh, that's just where I yanked him out of bed this morning." At least it brightened his day. I think the child abuse people probably got a phone call. And then there's the time he took the gang to Hardees for dinner while I was at work. As he sat watching the older three jump into the bin full of balls, a couple of ladies sat nearby watching watch-ing him curiously. He was used to that by now since people were always trying to figure out how we could have two babies several months apart in age but both under the age of one. This time, one of the ladies commented on it, obviously hoping for an explanation. expla-nation. "They have different fathers," was Jim's helpful answer, as he ushered everybody out, trying not to smirk. Enid probably ought to be glad all Joe did was ruin her financially and politically. At least he never got to babysit. baby-sit. That could have been a real disaster. Idealism increases in direct proportion to one's distance from the problem. Some consumers don't realize, however, that buying a home before it's been built is a lot different from buying buy-ing an existing home. Weather may delay construction and closing. clos-ing. Mortgage rates could shoot up. To avoid problems such as these, the Better Business Bureau suggests the following steps: Zero in on land plans. Ask the town's land planner about current zoning requirements and any proposals that have been submitted to develop nearby land. Visit the developer's model and earlier projects to check out the quality of the homes, community commu-nity centers, landscaping and other amenities. Ask residents if the developer delivered what was promised. Check with your BBB for a reliability report on the developer. Check out the home owners' association. In large metro areas, at least half of new home sales include membership in a homeowners' home-owners' association, according to the Community Associations Institute. In 1994, the BBBs received 20,000 inquiries and 5,000 complaints on drycleaningIaundry companies. Minimizing the likelihood of damage to your clothing begins with the purchase of the garment. Federal law requires apparel manufacturers to attach permanent perma-nent labels to garments with instructions for drycleaning or laundering. Look for this label when you are considering a purchase. The care necessary to keep a garment clean and attractive attrac-tive may be important to your purchase decision. You might think that you're extending the life of certain garments by drycleaning them, even though the label says machine ma-chine washable. In fact, most garments that are labeled with washing instructions may not be the drycleanable, as they may contain dyes or trims that are not resistant to drycleaning solvent. If you're in doubt about the serviceability of a particular garment, ask about the store's return policy before making the purchase. If the policy permits, you might then buy the garment with the understanding that it ScoLJ V Jour Cfiurcfi Bishop Vaughn Erickson 489-2961 860 E. 200 North Springville SECOND WARD .YW, RS, PM 3:40 Sunday School, Primary 2:50 Sacrament Meeting 1:30 Bishop Brian C. That way you can show your purchase to a drycleaner before wearing it, and receive input on its serviceability. To avoid problems on drycleanable dry-cleanable clothes, take a stained garment to the cleaners as soon as possible after it's soiled and tell the cleaner what caused the stain. When you pick up your cloth-; ing from the cleaners, examine it and point out any problems right away since this is the best time to resolve a problem, although some' stains can't be removed by any known method, most problems (a missed spot or inadequate pressing press-ing job) can be corrected by the cleaner. If a garment comes back damaged even though all care instructions were followed, the manufacturer is responsible. In this case, return the item to the store where you bought it. If the drycleaner failed to follow care instructions, the cleaner is at fault, and you're entided to re-, cover the value of t he garment's remaining life expectancy.
