Show FattGieriDig ropircs momentum When the former U.S. vice president called a popular television televi-sion sitcom irresponsible for its condoning portrayal of unwed motherhood, viewers and the media ate his lunch. Yet, three years later, when another and social scientist David Blanker-horn, Blanker-horn, '. in his book, "Fatherless America," dished up volumes of data showing fatherlessness "the most harmful trend of our generation," gener-ation," consumers lined up to buy his book and journalists quoted from it at length. A leading newspaper added its own spin: "Poverty, teen pregnancy, vio-lenceyou vio-lenceyou name the problem and absentee fathers contribute to it." Empowered by the surging scientific go-ahead, even politicians politi-cians are feeling free to once again assert that the two-parent family remains the most successful success-ful cradle of well-being and social virtue ever known. For instance, when compared by researchers to children in intact two-parent homes, fatherless children are, statistically, much more likely to: use and abuse drugs and alcohol attempt suicide experiment with premarital se'x and homosexual behavior drop out of school or suffer academically grow up in poverty engage in criminal activity Data, of course, can always be disputed. What cannot be disputed in this phenomenon Blankerhorn has called a "genuine "genu-ine social movement" sweeping America: fathers matter. And perhaps the torch bearers are communities of faith, whose adherents see the "modern" research re-search as only the latest support for age-old principles of truth. Dr. David C. Dollahite, a family scientist at Brigham Young University Uni-versity and a bishop in the LDS Church, says that "the scriptures and religious leaders have long taught what recent research has confirmed, that both committed fathers and mothers are important to meet the needs of the next generation. Good parenting has always been the foundation for good communities." In line with that precept, several major religious organizations organiza-tions breathed vital life into the movement in 1995. Nearly three quarters of a million men packed into stadium-sized venues pledging pledg-ing themselves "Promise Keepers" Keep-ers" in regards to their Christian duty to be good fathers and husbands. hus-bands. As a cornerstone of his October visit to the U.S., Pope John Paul II decried the worldwide world-wide "cycle of violence in which no one is spared, not even the children" and directed a plea to fathers to recommit to the traditional tradi-tional values of positive parenting and fidelity. , . m-mj. ji-iui. mmmmmmm-mmmmmmmmmmmmm0llMkam' ' "'' ' t " AJrJ3if4 i )nJ&(K ... 4 On Monday, December 18, Trudy Sumsion demonstrated spinning for the second grade students of Sage Creek School. The students had been reading about how wool from the sheep was made into a new coat. Most have never seen the wool actually spun into yarn. Mrs. Sumsion demonstrated how she washed the wool. Then she carded it, spun it into yarn and wound the yarn into a skein. She showed how her spinning wheel works. Each student received a piece of yarn that she had spun. It's that time again... That proclamation reads, in part: "The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, matri-mony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. "By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities neces-sities of life and protection for their families. Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "We warn that individuals who. . .fail to fulfill family responsibilities respon-sibilities will one day stand accountable ac-countable before God." Whether from the lectern of good science or the pulpit of faith, the message to fathers in 1995 was the same: Come on Dad, you're wanted at home. Kids born in '95 need SS numbers New parents should be aware of a change in federal law requiring requir-ing social security numbers (SSNs) for children born this year. Any taxpayer claiming a child as a dependent on a 1995 federal income tax return must include the child's SSN, unless the child was born in November or December De-cember 1995. According to the Internal Revenue Service, if the SSN is not available for a child born in November or December, the taxpayer must instead write "1195" or "1295," in the space: for the child's number on the tax re'turn, teow the child birth month. ' Including the SSN or the month and year notation will prevent delays in receiving an income tax refund. All SSNs used on the return should be checked and rechecked to avoid refund delays. If the parents already applied for an SSN for a newborn child through the birth registration process, the social security card should arrive within two to four months, usually before it's time to file a tax return. A taxpayer who has not applied ap-plied for an SSN for a dependent child can do so by completing From SS-5 and providing the Social Security Administration with an original birth certificate and one other piece of identification identifica-tion showing the child's name, such as a doctor's letter or hospi tal record. It usually takes only two weeks to get an SSN. To get more information on how to apply for an SSN or to get Form SS-5, contact the Social Security Administration or call 1-800-772-1213. Form SS-5 is also available at the IRS or by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM. Boy's Life Boys' Life, the premiere American youth publication, turns 85 years old next year. Boys' Life has entertained and instructed young men for decades, de-cades, and at a time when children's child-ren's magazines have to be cool, hp and slick, its staying power proves that quality literature still exhilarates young impressionable minds. "Boys' Life is just a great bargain," said Frank Aydelotte, Director of Public Affairs for the Boy Scouts. "For just 65 cents an issue, young boys can experience hours of learning and laughing." Readers have been entertained by long-standing features such as "Think & Grin," the always hilarious joke section; Pedro the mailburro, who responds to readers' letters; and "Scouts in Action," a tiue, comic-book style account of heroic and community service-oriented stories. "I'm certain Boys' Life will continue to thrive because it remains committed to its objec-'tives," objec-'tives," said J. Warren Young,, publisher of Boys' Life. Home and School: Vital Links by LILY ESKELSEN President, Utah Education Association Now, for those of you who might know my sons, don't laugh. I'm about to explain how important adequate sleep is. I'm about to tell parents out there that they should tuck in their children in at a decent hour each night. I'm about to plead with you on behalf of thousands of teachers to make sure your darlings have had eight hours of restful sleep. And I'm about to confide in you that I am still attempting to discover the technical skills of getting my night-owls off to sleepyland short of drugging their milk at dinner. When Jared was eight we faced off over the good-night tug-o-way. I tried the If-You-Give-Them-A-Logical-Explanation-They'll-Understand-and-Obey-You approach. "If you don't go to sleep on time, you're going to be tired and grouchy when I have to get you up for school tomorrow. tomor-row. " He tried the "My-Mother-Has-The-Brains-of-Zucchini approach. He said patiently, "But I'm not tired at night. I'm only tired in the morning. I won't be grouchy if you get me up later when I'm not tired anymore." For 17-year-old Jeremy, sleep has become our continuing control con-trol issue. Wanting so badly to assert his ripening emergence from the fresh, green seedling of childhood to the dense, unweeded vegetable matter of adolescence, he proudly proclaims that he doesn't need more than 14 seconds sec-onds sleep every other week. And apparent from our last parent-teacher conferences, he catches those few seconds during math class which explains his grade to me even though he still maintains that it's VERY common com-mon to make whac SEEMS like snoring sounds when one is just resting one's eyes. But I come to you armed with new data. Scientific, conclusive evidence that everything parents and teachers have said down through the ages are true. Sleep, it has been found, is directly linked to memory. Learning is significantly curtailed when sleep is inadequate. And not just because be-cause some kids actually doze off in class. When anyone-child or adult-has not had enough sleep, December 27, 1995 - The Springville Herald - Page Seven New logo design f or W8 Church A new logo design focusing on the name of the Savior has been announced by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "The logo re-emphasizes the official name of the church and the central position of the Savior in its theology," said Bruce L. Olsen, managing director of public af irs for the church. "It stresses ur allegiance to the Lord, Jesus Christ. "The three-line design reflects the prominence of the Savior in both proportional sizing and position within the name of the church," he said. "It not only strengthens the church's visual identity, but divides the logo into distinct elements which make it easier to read and to identify in the electronic media." The official name of the church was divinely revealed to Joseph Smith, first prophet and president of the church in 1838. However, the news media, the public and even members of the church have for many years referred to the church as "the Mormon Church" and its members mem-bers as "Mormons," after the Book of Mormon Another Testament Testa-ment of Jesus Christ. Other forms sometimes used include "The Church of the Latter-day Saints." "There are millions of people who never associate the official name of the church with the mane 'Mormon,'" Olsen said. "Hopefully, we will correct misunderstanding and confusion with this new graphic representation representa-tion that focuses on the name of Him whose Church it is. "We encourage the news media to use the official name of the church in the first reference in news stories," he said, adding that "the church prefers that 'Latter-day Saints" be used in second references in stories.
