Cholesterol lecture at Payson hospital Aug. 26 Mountain View Hospital Seniority Program is sponsoring a lecture regarding cholesterol on August 26 at 11 a.m. in the Hospital Board Room. All interested inter-ested individuals are welcome to attend. Dr. Vernon White, Family Practice Physician, is the guest lecturer. White recently joined the active medical staff at Mountain View. He completed a family practice residency in Ventura, California. Dr. White has treated patients for cholesterol problems. Stated Dr. White, "It is surprising to learn that cholesterol plays an important role in the healthy operation of the body." Most of the cholesterol in the body is manufactured by the liver, although al-though some is brought in through the consumption of certain cer-tain foods. The main function of cholesterol is to help carry fat through the circulatory system from the liver to other parts of the body for storage or for use in making energy. So how can cholesterol be harmful? AI9 low-density cholesterol (LDL) undergoes a chemical change which makes it prone to cling to the walls of the blood vessels. Fortunately, the liver constantly dispatches higher-density cholesterol cholest-erol (HDL) to free the stuck pieces of low density cholesterol and return them to the liver. When someone eats too much fat, however, the lower-density pieces become clogged along the blood vessel walls faster than the liver can manufacture and dispatch the higher-density "rescue" cholesterol. choles-terol. This could block a vessel in the heart and cause a hear attack. Cholesterol levels can be checked very easily with a simple blood test. Mountain View Hospital Hos-pital Laboratory will offer for this day a special coupon that can be used to check the cholesterol levels for a minimum cost of $5. For those taking advantage of this offer, a 12 hour fast is suggested but not necessary. The coupon will be given to those attending the lecture.
