Show Page Six - The Springville Herald - June 10, 1992 VolueSpeak, Dads 'n the hood Scout executive selected for national position By Joseph Walker Music, maestro. No, no, no. No violins. No pianos. No timpani, timpa-ni, please, I want something with a beat. Something that'll pound the windows out of a souped-up Chevy. Something that makes you want to stand up and say, "Yo!" Yeah, that's the stuff. Boom-a-wacka-wacka-boom-a-wacka-ba-boom! Me an' my homies was cruisin' the hood Lookin' for trouble, we was up to no good. Along comes The Man in his muscle machine. He gets me in his sights like he's gonna make a scene. 'Cuz Dadz 'n the hood. Yeah, Dadz 'n the hood. Translation: my buddies and I were goofing around one summer sum-mer night. We didn't have any big plans; we were just kind of hanging out, you know what I mean? Now, there's this indisputable law of quantum adolescence that goes something like this: six teenage boys plus excess time minus direction equals mischief. And it was just as true that night with us as it usually is with other boys on other nights in other places. Jimthe gentle giant who could probably bench press a Volkswagen but was too tenderhearted tender-hearted to really frighten anyone-was anyone-was demonstrating his technique for pulling stop signs out of the ground so they could be relocated to other, more interesting places. All of a sudden my Dad pulls up in his big old gas-guzzling company com-pany car. We all froze. I mean, what were we going to do hide? Dad knew where we lived. Especially me. For once I was grateful that I wasn't as strong as Jim-or at least that I wasn't in the same awkward position he was in, with his arms wrapped around a partially par-tially unearthed stop sign. If anyone was going to get in trouble, trou-ble, it would be him. Poor guy. But when Dad stepped out of the car he walked past Jim and right up to me. My life flashed before my eyes, and I didn't much care for the tragic ending. The dude's real cool, like a cube made of ice, Asks if he can play and then je jacks up the price. We're fightin' for turf, The Man is havin' his way. Everyone knows there's gonna be a price to pay When Dadz 'n the hood. Yeah, Dadz 'n the hood. Translation: Surprisingly, Dad didn't even seem angry. "So. what are you guys doing?" do-ing?" he asked. Groovy, I thought (hey, it was the "60s). If he couldn't see what was going on maybe we could bluff our way out of this. "We're just. ..uh.. .well, we were just walking around and we noticed this sign out of position," I stammered, stam-mered, "so we decided to fix it. That's all." Dave rolled his eyes. Jim struggled to suppress a chuckle. The rest of the guys did the best they could to support what was, admittedly, a fairly cock-eyed story. But Dad bought it. Or at least, he seemed to. "What a great idea!" he said enthusiastically. "I'm proud of you guys-really. And I'm inspired. in-spired. If you're going to be such good citizens let's do it right. I've got some shovels and some cement ce-ment mix at home. It won't take us long to fix this sign and that other one I saw laying by the side of the road over by Dave's house. Come on!" My friends looked at me. I looked at them. We sighed collectively. collec-tively. Groovy. He's a creature of the night, a cat with no fear He always seems to know when trouble's hangin' 'round here. There's nothin' you can do, there's no place you can hide You might as well forget it 'cuz you know deep down inside That Dadz 'n the hood. Yeah, Dadz 'n the hood. Translation: It was midnight before the last hole had been cleared, the last sigh had been cemented in and the last friend had been returned home. Dad and I tried to slip into the house quietly. We should have known better. Mom was sprawled on the living room floor playing all four f.ariahta hands while watching Johnny ''arson. And she was turning. "Where have you two been?" she wauled to know. I glanced at Dad, who was absolutely nonplussed. "Oh, we've just been performing a little community service," he said. "Right, son?" "Yeah," I replied, tired and relieved. "Community service." It's been almost 20 years now. Dad and I have never even mentioned men-tioned the episode from that night to this. I used to wonder how he knew where we were and what we were doing. But now that I've got a couple of teenagers of my own I think I understand. When you're a Dad and you really care that are some things you just know. Count on it. Boom-a-wacka-wacka-wacka-hoora-a-wacka-ba-boom ! , ", s H j ! Pioneer Flashbacks Mormons weren't the only ones to build churches in Pioneer Utah. In April of 1865 the First Church of Jesus Christ Congregation Congrega-tion and some other denominations denomina-tions worked together to construct the first non-Mormon church building, called Independence Hall, in Salt Lake City. The church moved, in 1891, to a new location at 400 East and 100 South, and a huge stained glass window was installed a year later. The beautiful colored glass depicts Christ on the road to Emmaus after his resurrection with a disciple walking on each side of him. Also in 1891 the church installed in-stalled the second oldest and second largest pipe organ in Utah. The organ has 2,700 pipes. A new church was built in 1965 by the First Congregational Church on Foothill Drive in Salt Lake City. The pipe organ, the ; stained glass window and the j original stately sanctuary chairs " were moved to this new location. Pews from the old building are located in a small chapel where weddings, Sunday School and other church meetings are held. MAPLETON STAKE FIRST WARD Sunday School, Primary 11:00 YW.
