Show I'agi' Knur - TV Siiringvillr Herald - January 29, 1992 LookingBack Life printout by Lot's Wife We bought a computer program pro-gram last year called Quicken, a budgeting program that "any idiot ian use". In other words, it had my name on it. So, of course, when we brought it home, my husband "got to be the boss of it." That's a lot of quotes there, but we're talking stereotypical behavior for us. First, he decided that we were going to put all of 1991 on 1 1 t was June starting with January 1 . Oh for Pete's sake! We dug in and got to April-by then, of course, it's now July. By August we were up to Junewhere I quit. Last Sunday night, I sat down and erased ALL of 1991, up to June, ;ind started over with 1992. Simple as pie. What we should have done in the tirst place if anyone around here would ever listen to me. Which they never will. Humph. Isn't this the way EVERYTHING EVERY-THING works in a marriage? Everything you do takes a little while to figure out, so instead of just counting last year as out "figure out" time, we use it as "blame time". My husband blames me because we didn't tinish 1991; I blame him because trying to get 1991 on was a stupid idea in the tirst place. Anyway, here I am trundling through the January checks and suddenly. I realize how wonderfully wonder-fully simple our lives are, but at the same time, completely complicated. com-plicated. They're simple because I can enter all my checks and classify them according to category; catego-ry; then I push a button and the printer shoots out a little list of the 20 or so categories that we spent money on. clothes, food, insurance, Pizza Hut, utilities, the phone. It takes up the center of one page. But, our lives are so full of the activities and hopes and dreams that those categories represent. The pleasure of seeing myself in the new dress or our kids in new jeans without holes. A warm coat and hat. Our food figure is way too high, but we eat good. It's chili on a cold day, chips and popcorn while we watch a movie, birthday cakes I should have made instead of bought. Russian art offical has surgery at Mt. View Hospital Art brought Alex Demitriev to Springville, but a medical need brought Alex to Mt. View Hospital. Hospi-tal. Alex Demitreiv's home is St. Petersburg, Russia. He was born and raised in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). He met James Da-bakis Da-bakis when Debakis was traveling through Russia with a tour of American tourists. Two years ago Alex became employed for Da-bakis Da-bakis and Vern Swanson, currator at the Springville Art Museum. Since then, Alex found and secured se-cured art work that was on exhibit exhib-it at a special showing at the Springville Museum of Art recently. re-cently. Springville 489-5614 The insurance payment is our hope that no one in our family will be taken seriously ill and wipe out our resources. The phone bill is my husband's connection con-nection to his business and my connection to friends and family. Simple categories are also the way we list our lives. We say I'm a teacher or a parent or a doctor and we allot so much time and energy each day to those functions. func-tions. We see our list centered carefully on a single page and we forget the hopes and dreams those categories used to represent to us when they were first started. We budget eight (or more) hours for our job expenditure, a half hour for our parent expenditure. expendi-ture. Ten minutes for our friend expenses, seven hours for refueling refuel-ing expenses (that's sleep and meals on the run), and so on and so on until we fill up the day. We may even give ourselves time to workout and time to relax. But we very seldom give ourselves time to think about what we're doing. We never take the time to wonder whether or not all these categories are getting us the life that we want to live. People frequently accept a complete set of job descriptions for the various parts of their lives without ever thinking of these job descriptions are going to work for them. Parents act towards their children all the time in ways that seem calculated to drive their children as far away from them as possible-and they do it because their parents did it that way. The same parents that they can't stand. We accept habits and less than perfect routines because we don't want to change anything. People live lives that are unsatisfing and they don't stop to think whether or not the categories catego-ries they've chosen to fill those lives with are at all relevant to where they want to be in 50 years. Just one peek at my Quicken printout the other night and I realized why I can't afford to get my living room painted. My money and my ideas are not going in the same directions. I think maybe I'll work on getting my life and my ideas to match up a little better too! who is a good friend to Dr. Randal Gibb, ear nose and throat specialist.
