Show 'iiuo Six The Spiinrvillt Herald Value Speak The pursuit by Joseph Walker "Wc hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men arc created equal, that they are endowed en-dowed by their Creator with certain cer-tain unalienable Rights, that among these arc Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness..." I don't know why the moment is frozen in my memory,- but it is: my fourth grade teacher, Miss Greene, is introducing us to "The Declaration of Independence," reading it to us with passion. Maybe it's because she is a fine teacher, or maybe it's because I have a crush on this young, handsome hand-some woman, but it feels as if every phrase shoots directly from her lips to my soul. I'm not just hearing the Declaration, I'm feeling feel-ing it. Especially that last phrase. At age 10, I'm really into happiness, so learning that my headlong pursuit of it is one of my "unalienable "unalien-able Righus"....wcll, suddenly I like the Founding Fathers even more than the Yankees. Not counting Mickey Mantle, of course. Only one problem. I have no idea what "unalienable" means. "I think it means you can't have it," George said when I asked him about the word during recess. "You know, like an unalienable un-alienable dream." My heart sank. Then I considered consid-ered it. "I don't think that's right, George," I said. "Why would those guys get excited about rights they can't have? It doesn't make sense." So, I went to the smartest person I know: JoAnn. Now, you have to understand that to be caught talking to JoAnn-alonc-was to risk ostracism for my circle of friends well into the next century. centu-ry. But I was desperate. "Well," JoAnn pondered, "I know 'alien' means someone from another country, so 'unalienable' must mean something that you can't bring in from someplace else." She seemed to know what she was talking about even though I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it had to do with happiness. happi-ness. Which is probably why I decided she was wrong. So, I gathered my courage and waited after school to ask Miss Greene. (Not that she was scary or anything. any-thing. It was just...wcll, you know, that crush). "It's a very good question Joe," she beamed when I asked her. "Let's go to the dictionary and find out." Holy cow-why didn't I think of that? Before long I learned that an "unalienable Right" is one that cannot be "alienated, surrendered or transferred." Now, that was Temple exterior being cleaned A major clearing and maintenance mainte-nance project on the exterior of the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Saints is underway. Workers for Jacobsen Construction Con-struction Company have put scaffolding scaf-folding up around the northwest towers of the temple to begin a project that will continue until cold weather shuts it down. Work will then resume next spring. The project should be completed complet-ed in time for the 100th Anniversary Anniver-sary of the temple's dedication. After 40 years of construction, the temple was dedicated April 6, 1893. The temple is in excellent condition, according to physical facilities officials, but a few of the granite stones arc showing some deterioration after more than a century of weathering and will be replaced with stone quarried from the same area that produced the original granite for the temple. In addition, the wood trim around windows will be cleaned and painted, pain-ted, the grouting between stones will be touched up, and the stone walls will be cleaned with high-pressure high-pressure water-spraying equipment. equip-ment. The temple exterior with last pressure-washed in 1962. I had the right-even the duty--to pursue happiness, and no one could take it away from me. No one, that is, except mom. "Good," she said when I announced an-nounced my intention to devote the rest of my life to my "unalienable "unalien-able Right" to pursue happiness. "Now go clean your room." Somehow this wasn't working. Where were the days of frivolity, where breakfast was pie and root beer and "work" was getting up to change the channel? Where were the endless ball games, the 10-speed 10-speed bicycles, the parties, the pizza? These were, after all, the things I was sure I needed to be happy. And happiness was my Right. I've learned a lot about happiness happi-ness since then-somctimes by getting what I thought I wanted. 1 had a job where I had to watch TV eight hours a day and it became be-came a chore. I had a 10-spccd and the chain kept falling off. I went to fancy parties and was bored. I played three Softball games in one day and I couldn't walk normally for a week. Just recently, I had pizza twice in a row and I still can't look a pep-peroni pep-peroni in the eye. And I even had pie and root beer for breakfast once. It made me sick. Mostly, I've learned that happiness hap-piness isn't a possession. You can't buy it, and no one can give it to you. It's a feeling, and it usually involves things like family, peace, security, love and service. It doesn't always come easily, but it is always worthwhile. And I think that's what the signers of "The Declaration of Independence" had in mind when they affirmed humanity's God-given God-given right to "the pursuit of Happiness." Hap-piness." They weren't talking about momentary pleasures; they were talking about long-term, whole soul, capital-H-typc Happiness. Happi-ness. It isn't something you can touch, but something you feel. It isn't something you get, but something some-thing you are. It isn't a lifcslyle, it's a way of life. But it Ls something you have to pursue. Only the journey won't take you far and wide, it will take you deep within yourself. You may not rack up any frequent flier miles,' but you will return with a much grander bonus. Peace. Contentment. And Happiness. After all, it's your "unalienable Right." Attend and Support Draw nearer to God S will draw nearer to vou.
