Show Re - The Springville Herald - March , 1991 VdueSpeak Confessions of coucEi potato by Joseph Walker I have a confession to make. I like TV. I really do. I've spent many an hour basking in the glow of the electronic hearth, and I happen to believe I'm a more rounded person because of it. (And I'm not talking about my waistline after mixing root beer and bean dip with my televiewing). Television has taken me places I've never been and shown me things I've never seen before. It has informed me. It has entertained me. It has made me think, believe it or not. And up until about six months ago, television even provided me with a job. As a television critic for a daily newspaper, I .used to like to think of myself as a professional profes-sional Couch Potato.' I did what everyone else does that is, I watched a lot ef TV and told other people what I thought about it. Only I got paid for it. It was a gfeat-job, and I enjoyed it--until the last year or so. As I think about it now, "Lonesome Dove" was probably the beginning of the end of those happy TV trails for me. CBS's miniseries version of Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was, in my view, extraordinary in every respect. It was a powerful power-ful story well told, featuring magnificent performances on both sides of the camera. I was grateful for the reminder of just how wonderful television can be, and pleased to have something that I could really get excited about to recommend recom-mend to my readers. And so I was more than a little disappointed when the viewing audience wasn't quite as enthusiastic about "Lonesome "Lone-some Dove" as I was. It was a respectable ratings performer, but it certainly wasn't , the blockbuster I thought it deserved de-served to be. Still, I fully expected ex-pected that the rave reviews my colleagues and I lavished on the Western epic would trigger a full-scale return to excellence by the entire Hollywood Holly-wood creative community. Instead, the following season sea-son the television season just passed was the worst since the studied mindlessness of the late 1970s, when series like "Charlie's Angels," "The Love Boat" and "Three's Company" dominated the Nielsen ratings. How bad was it? The hottest ,new show last season was nothing noth-ing more than souped-up home movies. The second most popular pop-ular newcomer was a crudely drawn cartoon that gave instant cult hero-role model status to a smart-aleck underachiever whose wittiest comeback is "Don't have a cow, man!" But it was "Twin Peaks" that finally convinced me it was time to find a real job. When I screened it in . January, it struck me as just another soap opera only goofier and more stylish. Many of my colleagues, however, were treating it like the second coming of "I Love Lucy." They praised it for being be-ing "different," "innovate" and "unusual." The way I. saw it, you could use the' same adjectives adjec-tives to describe carbonated sheep dip, but that still wouldn't make me want to wash down my nachos with il. Clearly television and I were drifting apart. So after nearly six years as a pro, I decided to return to Amateur Sofa Spud status. I turned in my CNN calculator. I canceled my subscription sub-scription to TV Guide. I even pulled the plug on our cable TV package. And I have survived. Strange as it may seem, this reformed TV addict hasn't even missed the 30 or so hours I used to spend each week watching television because it was my job. Nor has the ongoing ongo-ing "Fall TV Season" hype made me the least bit nostalgic for those days of being "in the know" of all things teletronic. I don't know who killed Laura Palmer. And I don't care. And you know what? Watching TV is fun again,' mostly because I'm only watching programs that I choose to watch. Sure, it bothers both-ers me that about 90 percent of everything you see on com mercial television is neither good nor bad, but just plain mediocre. Yes, it's frustrating that Hollywood has sold its creative soul to the bean counters, coun-ters, forsaking its vows of artistry art-istry to worship at the altar of the Almighty Bottom Line And, of coursetl'ni concerned when I look at television trends, which ignore traditional tradition-al values while concentrating on breaking down barriers and toppling taboos. But I don't let it affect me. At least, not anymore. As Jack Parr once said, "I have never seen a bad television program because I refuse to. God gave me a mind, and a wrist to turn things off." I'm using both my mind and my wrist more often than I have in years, and I find that I'm able to take advantage of the fine programs that televi- sion offers without being overwhelmed over-whelmed by trie junk. And when there's nothing on that I really want to see, I'm actually turning the set off and finding other things to do like playing ball with my children, visiting friends and neighbors and even are you ready for this?--reading. Amazing, huh? I wasn't sure I could do it, but I did. And if I could do it, hard-core user that I was, so can you. Because that's what it's going to take to convince the television industry that there really is an audience for the high quality programming it is still capable of producing. You can write all the poison pen letters to networks and advertisers that you want, but as long as large numbers of viewers watch the moronic pablum that dominates TV today, programmers are -going to assume that that's what the public wants to see. Of course, we may have some difficulty agreeing on what is "quality" and what is not. One person's pablum is someone else's prime rib. But taking responsibility for our viewing is the first step toward ttend Dave Anderson 33 East 100 South i Springville '-mi 489-8000 Call for FREE QUOTES Allen's Super Save Foods & Drugs 340 South Main Springville 489-4377 Sftcbon PfcotoCotor 80 West Center Springville 489-3218 JNI V """ty o 70111 489-3698 01717 NORTH MAIN The greatest power we can find in the world is God's love. Being prepared is the theme of the local council's campaign to raise endowment funds, Frank Aydelottc, Director of Public Affairs, explained. The campaign called Part-ncrs-In-Scouting is under the direction of Lawrence A. Haines, Chairman of the Board of Valtek Inc., an international firm located in Springville, Aydelottc said. Recs Falkncr, Scout Executive Execu-tive said the endowment funds will give the council a secure source of future funding in uncertain times. The campaign announcement announce-ment comes during February as a part of Boy Scout month. Falkncr said the Utah National Na-tional Parks Council, which is tenth largest in the nation out of 420 local councils, is funded annually through local contributions contri-butions from individuals and businesses. The council does not receive any federal, state, or institutional grants, he said. Endowment income, Falkncr said, will be supplemental source of funding for council operations. Aydelottc explained that gifts for endowment are held in a trust fund separate from council operating funds. The national leaders of the Boy Scouts of America are encouraging local councils to derive 25 percent of annual operating funds from endowment endow-ment income, he said. Falkncr said this local council coun-cil currently gets about 6 percent per-cent of its budget in endowment endow-ment income. This campaign, he said, is directed at raising outright gifts to immediately increase trust fund assets. The council, he added, has always sought estate gifts in the form of bequests and trusts.
