(f.'U only VI -llll - J1-' Ufafi AFT reossessfijenf of schools "As schools close for the 1989-90 school year, it is time to assess accomplishments and project next year's thrust in the public schools," observed Ken Zenger, Director of the Utah Project for the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Education should not be aimed solely toward preparing young people to locate and keep a job. Students must learn the skills necessary to analyze problems, project solutions, plan together, work together, and experience and resolve real-life issues, in order to Promote a more responsive, uturc citizenry. "Our present, regimented school structure does not allow for a wide use of students in the actual solution or assault upon the social issues at hand. Schools are overly concerned with finishing the book getting ready for the test, and cover- , ing the material,' rather than providing a sensitized citizenry." citizen-ry." No matter how many classes of math, science, English, art, music, speech, P.E., etc. a student stu-dent may take, heshe will not make an essential, individual or collective contribution to a better world until they learn and practice good citizenship. While books and lectures do establish historical perspectives and possible solutions, the real test comes in the life experiences experien-ces of the individual - will studentsrespond appropriately, in society, during their adult life? Young people learn more when they experience the realities of the problems of our world. The link between school studies and the world beyond the classroom must be more solidly linked. An elementary school in Salt Lake City is a prime ex- , ample of linking school studies to the actual, outside, real world. This school put studies into real experience as they promoted awareness and prompted a movement to clean up a polluted site. The students also established a wide awareness aware-ness of the importance of trees ? Help Wanted TYPIST position open immediately. Full time. Computer experience helpful. Another example of the potentials - students in psychologysociology classes should have the broadened opportunity to deal one-on-one with potential suicidal students, stu-dents, poverty, the homeless, unemployed, etc. "In general, any community or statewide problem should receive the added influence of students whose intellectual and physical energies could be used more effectively by combining schoolwork with actual hands-on hands-on experience in dealing with the widening social and economic eco-nomic issues that plague our society," Zenger said. Many teachers training institutions in-stitutions do not encourage prospective teachers to match academic knowledge with student stu-dent service projects. In other words, even with the apparent positive results of linking academics aca-demics with actual experiences, experien-ces, schools of education do not promote the training of teachers in correlating academics with hands-on experience. ex-perience. Teachers must be trained beyond a subject matter mat-ter toward the rudiments of dealing with students as a whole, i.e., what makes good students and, consequently, good schools. Colleges, teachers, legislators, legis-lators, the school boards, and the public must allow for and promote this transition in order to promote a more responsive, creative, future citizenry from our present school students. Zenger concluded, "We lose too many students because the school system is not as relevant " and responsive as it should be to today's needs. Too many students are lost because they do not fit the prescribed school system. We need schools designed for students and we need to forget forcing all students stu-dents to fit the prescribed school program. Many are lost who have much to contribute to our society. We wash them out of the school because their interests and aptitudes arc 'not acceptable' to the established school curriculum."
