Thot's Life Misnomers by Roger Sturman It must be confusing to the young people of today; in our society we have such a bunch of strange names and sayings. Once they were representative repre-sentative of the service or product that bore the name. Such is no longer the case. Take, for example, Motel 6. It used to be, when you went to a Motel 6 you would be charged S6 for the night. Today, the Motel 6 sign says "MOTEL 6 S22.95!" Have you ever wondered how come they don't just call it the Motel 22.95? Several competitors to Motel 6 have popped up during the last few years. There's Motel 8 that doesn't charge S6, S8, or S22.95. Then there's Cloud 9. Who knows what they charge? If you like to travel and would like to adopt a few children along the way, you might try the Comfort Inn. They have an interesting inter-esting sign; it says '"Comfort Inn, Kids Free." I have always been confused about the difference between Inter state and Intra stale. One means within one state and the other meaas within many states. Tell me what "Inter-lake "Inter-lake Industrial Park" means? . There are a lot of places with strange sounding names in Utah. How about "National Self Storage?" Stor-age?" Archie Bunker used to tell his wife Edith, to "stifle" herself on the popular TV sitcom. If the setting set-ting had been Utah, perhaps he would have suggested that she go "store" herself instead. Hardees restaurants are claiming they put the "fast" in breakfast. 1 wonder if they realize the true meaning of break-last? The original origi-nal word came about to describe the meal that would break the fast that started at bedtime. Now if Hardees put the '"fast" in breakfast, break-fast, does that mean you get quicker food or less of it? I wonder if the government of New Zealand knows they are being traded? Se Rancho Motel, which indicates a rural setting, set-ting, is right down town, and the Salt Lake Furniture Company is in Sandy. The best buffet in Salt Lake is not in Salt Lake, the TV commercials com-mercials say. Shucks, according to them, the best buffet dinner in Salt Lake is not even in Utah! Not to worry, though. I saw a bill board along the freeway free-way that stated "Utah's oldest restaurants res-taurants are coming back." I didn't know they were gone, did you? And if they were gone then how could they be the oldest restaurants in Utah. When they come back, won't they be the newest restaurants in Utah? Car dealers like to play word games loo. Mcnlove Dodge claims to be the "Last of the little guys." Gus Paulos, on the other hand almost claims to be a midget in his advertisements. adver-tisements. Dan Eastman doesn't go in for this "small" stuff. But he promises to let you "Drive home a new car with absoloutcly no cash! " Boy! I've done that before! The Colonel is giving away free cherry pie. His ads say "Free pic, no lie!" The agencies would make you think that Sarah Lee and the Colonel have a thing going and to celebrate would like to share some ' of General Washington's favorite dish with you, absoloutcly free. Sure! Have you seen the convenience stores called "Gas N Go?" I wonder won-der how come they're not called "Gas N Pay before you Go?" On the other side of the mountain there is a place called "All Seasons Pool & Patio Supply." Not lobe left out, there is also the "4 Seasons Greenhouse." Green-house." If we have 4 seasons, w hy do we need a greenhouse for more than 2 of them? You polar bears can pool and patio when it's 30 below too, but please don't invite me! Why aren't the Sunday funny papers funny? Didn't Mr. Goodwrench ever have a bad wrench? I've got several that aren't worth a tinkers darn. Inquiring minds would like to know; Is Goodyear a wine company, or are they the one's with the blimp? Is Goodrich good because they're rich, or rich because they're good? How come they make "Snow Cones" out of ice? Shouldn't they be called ice cones? No, come to think of it we already have "ice cream cones," which don't have any ice and possibly no cream, either. How come women go to the beauty salon and have a "permanent" put in their hair which is really a temporary tem-porary hair dressing? If it really were "permanent," would they still want to have it done? Why don't they just call it what it is: a "Temp.?" While we're discussing beauty parlors, I have never been able to figure out why they use "make-up" to "make over" the faces of their clients. If they are going to "make it up," why don't they just call it a "fib" and be done with it? There's a lot more but I see the bottom of this column is coming up and I'm out of room, so maybe I'll see you at the "7-11 store," which should be called the "24 store." Or maybe I'll just see you around --(around --(around what?) Devils playoff hopes sfill calivG bcsfely by Aaron Skabelund The Red Devils survived a blowout blow-out at the hands of the Provo Bulldogs Bull-dogs to return the edge Uintah 75-70on 75-70on Friday. The Devils are now3-9 now3-9 in league play and still have a chanceat the final berth in the state hoop tournament. Provo's James Johnson, Marc Durrant, and Mike Roth (including (includ-ing a fast break dunk) combined to a total of 53 points as the Bulldogs simply overpowered Springville 77-50. 77-50. The Red Devils trailed 18-5 and that was basically the story of the entire game. Brian Oakey was the lone Devil in double figures with 21 points. Playing at Vernal, in a game plagued by fouls, The Red Devil bench enabled Springville to slip by Uintaha. Springville was called for 33 fouls and Pat Bird, Kerry Oman and Oakey fouled out. The Red Devils started slowly and trailed 22-13 at the end of the first quarter. However, Springville outscored Uintah 26-17 in the second sec-ond quarter taking their first lead on two Bird foul shots with no time remaining. Throughout the second half, the Red Devils maintained a small lead. Near the end of the fourth quarter with the Utes threatening, Uintah's George Murphy (who led Uintah with 20 points) flagrantly fouled Oman who retaliated with a push and was whistled for a technical and was ejected. So sophomore Matt Hall came off the bench and hit both of Oman's foul shots, as well as two other key free throws. Mike Nyman also helped seal the victory with two final free throws. Oakey led Springville with 18 points, Bird scored 17, and Scott Johnson added 13. School lunch Wednesday, Feb. 15 Managers Choice.
