Gardner Q. Why should I have a fluoride treatment everytlme I have my teeth cleaned If I brush with a fluoride toothpaste. A. According to a new research at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, toothpaste can lose some of its fluoride content if it sits on the store shelves too long. The research concluded that after a six-month shelf life, the loss depending on the brand, can be anywhere from 4 to 28 percent. The loss jumps to 15 to 50 percent after 28 months. To be safe, do your shopping at a busy store where the products are always rototed regularly, and be sure to have a fluoride treatment with every cleaning. July 13, 1988 - The Warning signs of anorexia by Cory SerVaas, M.D. At a White House performance, the brother-and-sister singing duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter were once introduced to the audience as "Young America at Its Best." It is believed by Karen's friends that her death, at age 32, was from trying to live up to that image. She died as a result of an eating disorder known as anorexia nervosa. This is a condition causing victims to become obsessed with body weight to the point that they might literally starve themselves to death if not treated. Who gets anorexia? This mysterious compulsive urge to control weight strikes primarily young female hyperachievers described as "Good Girls." Typically models, ballet dancers, and runners are vulnerable. Anorexic girls are often from good, loving families and comfortable high-income homes. Almost any major life change makes a predisposed person vulnerable to starting a starvation regimen. Parents who recognize the symptoms are now getting" their youngsters in for professional help before they become severely ill. Here are some symptoms that should alert ou if you have a beginning anorexic. There will be an excessive preoccupation with food. They refuse to eat meals or will pick at their food. They will worry about fat thighs and stomachs. You might notice laxatives and diuretics missing, or you might come across diet pills. There will be excessive exercising. Food may be hidden. Anorexic girls will stop having menstrual periods. Their moods will appear depressed or self-deprecating. self-deprecating. Compulsive or obsessive ob-sessive behavior may be noticed, usually associated with food. Anorexics will seek out cookbooks in a bookstore or read menus in restaurant windows they pass. They often don't eat the food themselves, but the like to cook for others. There are certain times when a girl is most vulnerable. Among them are: when going off to college; when getting into a more competitive group with peer pressure on dieting; or when the menstrual cycle begins. Anorexic patients should be hospitalized and fed until their weights gets up to 80 or 90 percent of an ideal weight. Then their thinking can function in a way that they can make sense of the illness. Then they can learn to live without having to be excessively thin. Tyree wedding Thurs.
