Springville basketball bigman Duaine Williams is shown above fighting for the ball in the game last week against Uintah. The Red Devils won that one easily 81-49 with Williams leading the scorers with 21 points. Matt Peterson put in 20. Duaine was also in the news this week when he signed a letter of intent to play football for Brigham Young University. He was one of two highly sought after Utah County players to go with BYU. Duaine played offensive lineman for the Red Devils. He stands 6-foot-6 and played football at 240 pounds last fall. Photo by Charles Lowery. Springville pounds Uintah and drops one to Tim p view by Aaron Skabelund The Springville High School Basketball Team once again came away from the past week with a split winning easily against Uintah and falling to Timpview. On Wednesday following sophomore and J V wins, the varsity came out strong and blasted the Utes, 81-49. The Red Devils' defense held Uintah to just four points in the first quarter as SpringvUle's offense scored seventeen. The game was basically over after that with Springville slowly-but-surely building a bigger lead over Uintah. The Red Devils were led by Duaine Williams with 21 points and Matt Peterson with 20. On Friday, the Devils hosted the undefeated and. top ranked team in the state, Timpview. The T-birds powerful offense consistently put the ball in the bucket and led 26-16 at the end of the first quarter. One of the highlights of the game occurred during the second quarter as Scott Hullinger drove to the hoop, momentarily lost control of the ball, jumped 180 degrees, and flipped the ball to Peterson who made the 18 .foot jumper cutting the T-bird lead to nine. But Timpview continued to build their lead, although at times the Devils seemed to play basket-for-basket with them, ultimately winning 104 to 82. Timpview was led by Matt Bowman with 31 points and guard Quincy Lewis with 26 that included four three-pointers. Peterson was high point man for the Devils with 26 and Hullinger added 16. Post men Marc Penrod and Williams contributed con-tributed 11 and 8 points, respectively, respec-tively, and sophomore Brian Oakey 1 987-historic fire year in State of Utah the Utah Division of State Lands and Forestry had its busiest fire season in the state's history in 1987. Division personnel responded to 811 fires in 1987. The average number of fires during a fire season is 600. Fire destroyed approximately 28,299 acres of land. Losses to real property and natural resources on private and state lands were estimated at $1,315,000. State and county fire suppression costs totaled about $391,000. On a national level, more fire fighters were deployed to battle fires in the summer of 1987 than any time in the history of the United States. The majority of fires occurred in western states. The Division of State Lands and Forestry provided personnel per-sonnel and support during the fires in California, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming and Hawaii. Division of State Lands and Forestry personnel assisted federal land management agencies on 129 fires on federal lands. Property and resource damage was approximately ap-proximately $973,500. Estimated suppression costs were $58,700. A number of fires threatened summer homes, ranches and farms, thereby increasing suppression costs. However, no major structures were lost or damaged. In October, 1987, the 100th U.S. Congress passed a resolution honoring the nation's fire fighters. continued to improve his play and scored 8. The Red Devils are now 8 and 5 in league play and still tied for third with Spanish Fork in Region 8. This week Springville plays their last regular season game at Pleasant Grove, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. If both Springville and Spanish Fork win, they will face a coin toss to see who comes in fourth place and play second place Provo in the first round of the state tournament. Not a desirable position for the Devils who have lost to Provo twice by 36 and 38 points. Before earning the coin toss the Red Devils must first beat Pleasant Grove, then see what fate has in store for state.
