Show Page Four - The Springville Herald - May 20, ,1987 Scouts plan to affocEi problems in society In the past few months, the Boy Scouts of America has embarked upon new and unchartered frontier ranging from implementation of the Donor Awareness Presidential Good Turn, production of a booklet on child abuse, to development of the new national program planning process. Ben H. Love, Chief Scout Executive of the National Council, Boy Scouts of America, outlined the road ahead for the Scouting movement and identified four issues that he refers to as "...unac-ceptables "...unac-ceptables in terms of their devastating impact on our society." Hepledged that "...the Boy Scouts of America will play a key role in combating these unacceptables." "The first unacceptable facing our society is drug abuse," said Rees Falkner, Scout Executive, Utah National Parks Council, "Not a day goes by without some major news report of the drug problem and its disastrous effects. So serious is the issue of drug abuse that President and Mrs. Reagon have now declared a new offensive to fight this growing menace. We are involved in this fight also." "The BSA will soon initiate a hard-hitting educational campaign entitled 'Drugs: A Deadly Game.' Our message and materials will be directed to all young people, both in and outside of Scouting." stated Love in his communique to all the councils in the United States. "The second unacceptable is illiteracy." said Falkner, "Statistics reveal that nearly 25 million adults in our society are functionally illiterate. Scouting has wonderful tools with which to fight this problem. The Official Boy Scout Handbook exposes millions of youth to the principles of outdoor skills, responsible citizenship, history, energy and conservation, and health and safety. Boys' Life has featured the works of Jack London, Pearl S. Buck, Orville Wright, Willy Mayes, John Glenn, Vince Lombardi, Bill Cosby, and many others. Few other magazines can lay claim to such a distinguished group." Scouting plans to attack illiteracy in many other ways. Special attention at-tention will be given to encouraging youth to read newspapers, good magazines, uplifting novels and reference books. The BSA will encourage en-courage the authorship of youth adventure books by encouraging the youth to buy and read such books. In cooperation with the local schools, the Boy Scouts will launch an extensive ex-tensive educational campaign to increase communications through the vehicle of writing and reading. "The third issue is child abuse, a problem that afflicts -countless families from all walks of life." Love Timberline dates set Utah National Parks council of the Boy Scouts of America has announced the dates for the Hob-blecreek Hob-blecreek District Timberline course this summer. The course will be held June 22-27. Timberline is a youth leadership development course for young men who are Boy Scouts. The young man must be 12 years of age and be a first class scout. He should be recommended recom-mended by his scout leader. During the course he will learn leadership skills, which he is to put into practice upon returning to his home troop. This is an experience that a young man will remember and use throughout his life. With time growing short, those boys who wish to attend and have not made application, should do so right away. Applications are available from his scoutmaster, the scout office, Mark Poulson, 489-8582, or Allan Butterfield, 489-6315. f.lapleton Stake Young Adults plan party The Mapleton Stake Young Adults are sponsoring a Picnic Party on Saturday May 23, at 6 p.m. in the east pavilion of the Mapleton City Park. To dale, more than 100,000 copies of the book have been printed and distributed to families and businesses as an aid to their employees em-ployees in dealing with this problem." "And finally, the fourth unacceptable unac-ceptable and perhaps the culmination of the other three is the tragedy of unemployment," said Falkner, "Without proper self esteem, physical and mental preparedness, and spiritual awareness, there is almost no way that a person can successfully function in our complex society." It is the consensus of the Scouters in the Utah National Parks Council that these "unacceptables" are real and tragic, and they weigh heavily on society. In recent meetings held in the council on this subject, leaders have agreed that they are surmountable. sur-mountable. "We, both volunteers and professional, in the council, are committed to confronting these problems facing our nation." said Falkner. "We will soon appoint a special task force and charge them with this responsibility: Scouting, with its vast human resources, to alleviate, if not eliminate these unacceptables."
