It was submitted sub-mitted by the Springville Historical Society. I, LeRoy D. Johnson, was born in Mapleton, Utah, on May 31, 1915. I was never called LeRoy by my folks, just Roy. I grew up in Mapleton and was educated in Spanish Fork, Mapleton and Springville schools. I married Marie Peery on February 19, 1935. She is the daughter of Rollo Peery. Her dad was a barber in Springville at that time. I went to the Moler Barber College, in Salt Lake City for six months and graduated and started barbering with my father-in-law, on January 1, 1936. Our barber shop was located at 242 South Main in Springville. My father-in-law died on July 5, 1940. I worked alone in that shop until September of 1941. Then I moved in with Hughes Curtis and our shop was part of the Rivoli Theater located at 258 South Main. Hughes and I worked together in this same shop until October of 1966, a little over 25 years. Hughes retired at this time and sold his half of the shop to Loren Sanders. I worked two years with, Loren then he sold his half to me and he moved to Idaho. I worked alone in this shop until September 1970. At that time Marie and I bought a building at 262 South Main. We' remodeled the building which already had a barber shop in it Mm dlBrelL An investment in your future! also." I have worked on Main Street for 46 and one-half years. Out of all of the people that were on Main Street when I started in 1936 1 am the only one left that is still working. I have seen a lot of changes on Main Street in that length of time and practically every building has been remodeled. Many of them have been torn down and new buildings built in their place. Marie and I have always liked Springville. It is a good town and great place to live. April is Cancer Month and women are encouraged to educate themselves on the signs of breast cancer and have a mammography test Awareness and early detection are the best hope in treating breast cancer. Breast cancer is dangerous Although we don't like to think about it, breast cancer is a dangerous disease in our country. In fact, breast cancer occurs in one out of eleven women in the United States. There is not much known about the disease, and as yet there is no way to prevent it from occurring, but through awareness and early detection, specific action can be done to keep cancer from threatening your life. Mountain View Hospital is committed to assist in protecting women through the use of proven procedures designed to detect cancer early, before any signs or symptoms of the disease are seen. GRATITUDE Those who have the most to be thankful for are generally the ones who have worked the hardest. The complainers who whine that they have nothing have often done nothing. Those who work hard for what they have know its value. They are the ones who appreciate what the Lord has given them. The ones who are given everything on a silver platter are seldom satisfied, and do not know true values.
