A forerunner to the handicraft consignment idea actually dates back to 1876, President Winder said, when Eliza R. Snow, under the direction of Brigham Young, opened a shop in the old Constitution Building on Main Street across from the ZCMI department store. This shop was later closed and a second store opened in 1890 at 123 E. 100 South. null "For where your treasure is, there will your heart he Duke Jewelry Store 220 South Main Springville, UT 489-4221 Happy Service Markets Brookside 759 E. 400 S, Springville, UT 489-5031 Happy Service 110 S. The cemetery contains 50,000 to 150,000 graves dug in layers beginning about 9 feet below the surface. The deepest graves contained the remains of Romans, along with Roman pottery, statues, jewelry, and other artifacts. Those nearer the surface were dug by Christians. Many bodies unearthed were wrapped in layer upon layer of finely crafted textiles, and the dry sand has kept some of the mummies remarkably well preserved. Griggs says the cemetery offers new information about an important epoch in the world's history. A forthcoming forth-coming book by him, based in part on observations from the dig, argues that Christianity came to Egypt earlier and with greater force than previously thought. At a dig at Tell Qarqur in Syria, Dr. John M. Lundquist, who recently took a position in New York University, has been uncovering layers of civilization that might span 5,500 years. Ironically, the excavation ex-cavation is not far from the battle site where Ramses II fought the Hittites in his most famous clash the Battle of Qadesh. At Tell Qarqur, other important battles took place. In 853 B.C., the Assyrian Shalmaneser III and King Ahab of Israel struggled. The city today lies beneath a mound of earth that rises 90 feet from a sparsely populated valley. Dr. Ray Matheny directed several seasons of excavation ex-cavation at El Mirador and says it might be the largest Mayan city yet discovered. , Among the 2,000-year-old artifacts ! Matheny unearthed were a 1,000-foot acropolis, a huge stone temple, a ceremonial plaza, causeways, pyramids, and homes apparently belonging to the elite. . Other BYU archaeologists are conducting digs within the United States. For four years Dr. Joel Janetski has directed excavation of an Anasazi Indian village in southern Utah. The Anasazi densely populated parts of Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico until about 800 years ago. "We would like to find out why the Anasazi disappeared rather suddenly sud-denly from the Four Corners area around 1300 A.D.," he says. Janetski also has directed several rushed archaeology projects to save sites from new construction. In 1984, a bulldozer clearning a path for the Dr. Alan C. State officials of-ficials asked BYU to conduct a hurried excavation. Janetski and his team subsequently uncovered 40 pit houses and 40 other structures. "This provided some of the most spectacular information in the state," Janetski says. "We hope the data hips us in analyzing a social organization." This summer, workers dredging Utah's Jordan River just a few miles from BYU stembled onto another Indian site. Janetski, who quickly excavated the site with the help of amateur archaeologists, believes it was a camp set up to process fish caught in the river. Dr. Dale Berge has concentrated on sites of interest to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU's sponsoring institution. Sites have included Nauvoo, IL a nineteenth century city built entirely by Mormons, and Camp Floyd, .a military base established in Utah in 1858.
