Show IV' Four - The Sprinnvillc Herald - April IS, l'ISl Pudteff nominated for educator award Dr. George Puckett, who has been the principal of Springville High School for eight years and is retiring at the end of this school year, has been nominated by the Springville High School PTA Council for the National PTA Phoebe Apperson Hearst Outstanding Educator Award. Dr. Puckett has dedicated his life to serving students, parents and the' community, and the PTA felt it very appropriate to honor his commitment to education and his many accomplishments by nominating him for this award as he is about to retire. As principal of .Springville High School. Dr. Puckett has had the welfare and success of each of his 800 students as his top priority. His door has always been open to any student who mightwant to just come in and talk or ask for help. He has encouraged all of his students to succeed academically and socially. Dr. Puckett can often be seen in the halls during class and lunch breaks and after school just chatting with his students, finding out how they are doing and how they feel about their school. One student was heard to say, "Why does he have to retire this year? Why can't he wait until I' graduate"? He respects the opinion of the student officers and often seeks their advice on matters dealing with the studentbody. And he enjoys being a part of the school activities and makes an effort to. attend the concerts, con-certs, plays, dances and sporting events that go on each year. He was a favorite chaperon this year when he accompanied the marching band to Los Alots, California for a competition. com-petition. Dr. Puckett feels that one of his main functions as the principal of SHS has been to support the home and to keep parents informed about student activities. This he has accomplished ac-complished through many avenues. His door has always been open to PTA leaders, parents and other community members. With "his retirement this year, Dr. Puckett will have served 34 years in education. He spent 16 years teaching band, chorus, math, business and social science. He also spent 16 years in administration, 2 years as Coordinator of Instruction for our district and 14 years as either a vice-principal or a principal. Answering a call for his church in 1972, he served for 2 years as Superintendent of the LDS School System in Tonga. While in the I i taatt Dr. George Puckett islands he was able to implement a vocational education program, begin co-op programs for agriculture and marketing produce, build a successful sports program and build a new high school in the northern islands. He received his M.A. degree in 1968 and his Ed. D. degree in 1976. He is the Utah representative to the Advisory Committee for the National Curriculum Committee is chairman of our local Region 8 Board of Managers and is on the Board of Directors for the Utah High School Athletic Association. He is also a member of Phi Delta Kappa. And he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Springville Musuem of Art. Dr. Puckett has also served in many leadership positions for his church. He is married and has three children and four grandchildren. The Springville High School PTA in their nomination of Dr. Puckett for this high award, stated that, "He is an unassuming person, quiet and kind, but he is extremely effective in his heavy responsibilities. He is an outstanding educator and we appreciate ap-preciate his contribution to the lives of our children and the community in general." Senior Citizens spring banquet Friday The Springville-Mapleton Senior Citizens's Spring Banquet will be Friday, April 20 at, 12 noon, instead of the usual last Friday of the month. Good Friday was deemed an especially appropriate time for celebrating this Springtime. The theme for the banquet will be "The Colors of Spring." Decorations will include daffodils and Easter bonnets. bon-nets. Bernice Granmer is in charge of decorations and Becky Fullmer is overseeing the food preparation. Vert Child, Blain Miner arid Frank Taylor are in charge of seating arrangements. Call captains have contacted members of the senior citizen organization inviting them to attend the special program and dinner. Approximately 285 members at tended the March banquet. Donna Hutchings has made arrangements for entertainment following the banquet. The Kieth Grames group will provide the program. This highly recommended and talented family group of five live in Pleasant Grove. The menu for the banquet is: Virginia baked ham, whipped potatoes, gravy, steamed broccoli, Easter cake and milk. A special salad and ice cream is being added by the kitchen staff. m.iiii Former Utah Secretary of Agriculture, Ken Creer, visited the Brookside School last week and discussed agriculture with the fourth graders there in conjunction with their study of Utah history.
