The resolution was accepted unanimously and was signed by all the members of the Shade Tree Commission and the mayor and city council. Margaret Conover, who has been the president of the Shade Tree Commission for many years is a worker, and she has worked hard for Springville. When she finds something that needs to be done, she gets it done one way or another. She is relentless in her desire to improve Springville and make it a better place to live. Because of Margaret, Springville has beautiful trees lining our Main Street from one end to the other, and this Christmas season, Margaret was responsible for the tiny lights that decorated the trees throughout the business district. Margaret and her workers created the Heritage Park on North Main which was once a vacant lot full of weeds and is now a welcome picnic area planted with many trees and shrubs native to Utah. Margaret decided Springville needed a flagpole. She is very patriotic to her country and wanted every citizen to see that flag flying when they were in Springville. She set about to get one and ended up with donated pipe for the pole and an organized Flag Fund Committee that takes care of repairing, replacing, and cleaning the flags that are flown. And what a beautiful sight it is to come into Springville -specially at night and see Old Glory waving! The Shade Tree Commission, headed by Margaret, has spent countless hours planting trees and seeing after those that need trimming trim-ming by the city. Since 1977, to the fall of 1983, 2,926 trees have been planted in Springville. This will be the fourth year that Springville has been named a "Tree City' under the direction of Margaret. Many trees that were planted by our pioneer forefathers, have been designated 'Heritage Trees' and preserved with a plaque in honor of those who planted them. Margaret did that. Before her many years of work on the tree commission, Margaret was head of the city beautification, and under her, many old barns and unsightly areas were torn down, cleaned up, planted and beautified. "Every city in America should have a Margaret Conover", said Jerry Smith, councilman who read the resolution and who has worked with the Shade Tree Commission as his 'assignment from the city council. !-;? Springville in memory of Harrison. This wasn't the first time that Jim had given to Springville. He donated the flagpole that stands in the Heritage Park. Margaret had already told the city that she wanted to use the money to plant trees and shrubs on the new little lit-tle park they were planning. Then Mr. Huish was himself killed in an industrial accident in Fountain Valley, California, several weeks ago, and it became a special way to also honor him for his love for Springville. Mr. Huish, whose mother was born and raised here, never lived here himself, but was buried here in our Evergreen Cemetery. Thank you, Margaret, for all you do for Springville. We need more citizens like you!. Conover The Margaret Bird Conover Park will have another special plaque on it. It willwbe a small plaque in memory of Harrison W. Conover, her late husband who supported her in all of these projects in Springville, and in memory of the late James W. Huish, nephew of Margaret. When Harrison passed away last July, 'Jim' Huish, son of Mary and 'Blackie' Huish of Wafaut Creek, California, sent Margaret $1,000 for her to use to do something in This year will soon be over. With the promise of summer and' this peek-a-boo spring we've been having, the minds of our kids have run 60 miles an hour in 60 different directions. Eight young people have managed to remain examples of thoughtful consideration. Actually, there are many who roam our halls who qualify for citizens of the month. The hardest part of the selection process is not in finding candidates, but rather in choosing just eight. Those who shone in March were: 8th grade; Jodi Stika. Melanie Smith, Duaine Williams and Paul Morgan. 9th Grade; Trisha Olsen, Cidnee Whitney, Logan Noon and Gary Diamond.
