The seminar is sponsored by the BYU Departments of Family and Local History Studies and Conferences Con-ferences and Workshops in conjunction con-junction with the Utah Genealogical Association. This seminar is not just a smorgasbord of genealogical presentations designed to merely motivate people, according to Dr. V. Ben Bloxham, director of the program. "Participants register for two three-hour blocks of training each day on a beginning, intermediate, or advanced level of instruction. This training enables them to acquire the skills and knowledge of sources that they need to do research on their own," he said. In addition to the basic instruction, in-struction, there will be courses on research in the United States and Canada, Britain, and the Scandinavian Scan-dinavian and Germanic countries. There is also a course for LDS genealogy instructors. Two new courses being offered this year include "The Southern States" and "The Midwest and American Religions." The latter will be team-taught by Dr. Milton Back-man, Back-man, professor of Church history and doctrine at BYU, and Willard Heiss, a leading authority on Quaker genealogy and family history. Backman will teach the historical background of American religions, and Heiss, a practicing Quaker from Indianapolis, will discuss the sources for doing research in all American religions. "Participants will be able to talk with Mr. Heiss individually and ask him questions during a special evening session of the seminar," said Bloxham. William Sarjeant, president of the British Archivists Association and an authority on local sources for British genealogy, will also teach several courses. He is a visiting professor of history at BYU this summer. Buses will be available to transport tran-sport interested participants to the Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City during the seminar. The registration fee for the seminar is $45, with housing available on campus for an additional ad-ditional $40. For more information, call Vicki at 378-4853. Bloxham will conduct a four-week research trip to Britain immediately following the seminar. Those who are interested in this trip may contact him at 339 KMB, BYU, Provo, Utah 84602; (801) 378-4387, Crop report Last week may have been the nearest to normal week all season. If you are more concerned about doing your best and enabling others to reach their potential, you'll never lose. The atmosphere of sports dominates so much of life today, and with it, the need to win. When the need to win overshadows the way the game is played, so that rules are broken and the welfare of others is disregarded, the win is a hollow victory. There is nothing wrong with winning. . .when it is done with honor. Photo & Text by David Bly r t 1 VI I" Na tt&n ? fm - H Primary. Sunday School 2:20 YW.
