"The Best Two Years of My Life could be best night of your life says play's guest reviewer By Cliff Eley Guest Reviewer For those of you who remember the first time you really enjoyed a football game, a ballet, an artichoke, or anything that was previously unpalatable, a comedy now playing at the Villa Playhouse Theater in Springville may bring back that first time feeling simply because it may be the first time you enjoy a Mormon stage production. Many of the shows pawned off as good art on LDS audiences have been light on reality and heavy on schmaltz. However, "The Best Two Years of My Life" proves what seemed to be impossible: that a play. with a Mormon Mor-mon theme can be entertaining, en-tertaining, realistic and worthwhile without offending of-fending the masses or murdering the genre. Perhaps most refreshing is that this comedy doesn't drown the viewers in sentimentality as so many three-hanky productions have done in the past. VFW presents American flag to first local Brownie troop Friday the Veterans of Foreign War presented an American flag to Springville's first Brownie troop. The Brownie organization is part of the scouts, involving interested in-terested girls ages six through eight. After leaving Brownies, girls are advanced to Junior Girl Scouts. Brownies receive patches as they earn their achievements. Springville's Brownies are presently working towards their Special K patch which gives them a better understanding of disabled people and helps them to become more sensitive to their needs. The Brownies recently finished a unit on the world of art, during which time they visited the Springville Museum of Art. A study of the world of discovery took the Brownies on a tour of McDonald's in Spanish Fork. A unit of the world of well-being took the Brownies to the Mountain Fuel Supply Company in Provo. The home economist there helped in their study of nutrition and measuring methods. Using the information and skills gained from the visit, the girls cooked and ate a nutritious meal. In March a unit on the world of people will teach the Brownies about I j ... ' Y X - r Y -( ' ' jf v jj Springville's only Brownie troop meets Fridays at the Brookside School. The group includes interested six, seven, and eight-year-old girls. Their leaders are Margaret Schofield and Yvonne Argyle. The brownies are, front row: Wendy Haskill, Amy The play's name conjurs the familiar theme of Elder meet investigator. Elder looses investigator, Elder baptizes investigator, but "The Best Two Years of My Life" addresses the very real conflicts of mission life including intra-mission politics, personality conflicts, lack of motivation and (yes folks, how could we get by without it) the "Dear John." The story takes place in a four-missionary apartment in Holland. Writer-director Scott Anderson plays the part of a homesick, depressed and generally nonproductive non-productive Elder Rodgers who has lost his girl to a past companion and is disgusted with the naivete of his present one. He is the newly arrived Elder Walker played by Tracy Gardner. Steve Sater portrays Elder Michaels, the district leader who is trying to inspire Rodgers to make the last two months of his mission productive. Another of his duties is to explain to the February Japan. A Japanese exchange ex-change student will visit the troop and teach the girls about her country and its customs. In May the scouts will celebrate their 70th birthday birth-day in a "Girl Scout Birthday Bonanza." Springville's Veterans of Foreign Wars presented Brookside Brownies with an American flag Friday. Marion Schroder, Jack Rowland, Clifford Mace and Daniel B. Alleman are shown, as scouters Jill Robertson, Amy Reeves and Tesha Harvey accept the beautiful banner. I: zone leaders about Rodger's laziness. Without a doubt the best performance given is Duane Tuft's portrayal of a toothy-grinned, plaster-haired plaster-haired Elder Stevens who between writing his three girlfirends and tormenting tor-menting Rodgers, is looking for ways to break into the mission leadership. He struts and coos like so many prima donnas that every returned missionary painfully remembers. Mark Hansen, the investigator in-vestigator is performed by Alan Rockwell. Rockwell Rock-well is a standup comedian in the Provo area, but takes a serious role here, allowing the others to play off of him. Hansen meets up with Elders Rodgers and Walker in a park one afternoon. Soon after, while teaching Hansen, Rogers realizes the reason he Js in Holland and the importance of his mission. The humor is rapid fire, albeit a bit predictable. Aside from lines like. "I'd like to give him a piece of my mind," or "Oh, do 25. 1982 - The Springville Festivities include a day at Lagoon and a camping party. This enjoyable, yet thought-provoking look at missionary life succeeds largely because it was written by a former missionary, not his mother. The message is subtle. So if the usual slop which has been flushed down the pike is not your cup of goo, you can rejoice now. The famine is over. It's safe to go back to the theater.
