Show Page Ten - The Springville Herald - July Tiny tots One of the highlights this summer at . Springville Community Pool is private swim lessons for small children. Rhonda Hickey has been teaching her technique at the pool for the last two summers. She received her training for personalized swimming swim-ming instruction from Mary Mossette, owner of a private business specializing in instruction of children in Visalia, California. Her first contact with Mrs. Mossette was when her daughter, now 7, was 22 months old. She enrolled her daughter in the course and was so sold on the merits of the instruction in-struction that she trained with Mrs. Mossette for two years. When she moved to Provo she introduced her technique to the Springville Pool and they agreed to hire her and offer the lesson to Springville residents. Ronda Hickey uses emotion in teaching her infants to swim, she has to that's all many of them understand. Ronda specializes in small children some as young as 3 months old. Establishing a loving, personal relationship between the tiny pupils and herself is the key to her teaching methods. Ronda is a firm believer that giving swimming lessons is 90 percent psychology and 10 percent actual swimming. A loving attitude is particularly important during the first lesson. According to Ronda. "I do give them alot of love because that's how they survive the first lesson." As in any teacher -student relationship, Ronda said she has to maintain a degree of discipline. "I'm firm, but it's with a lot of love and patience," patien-ce," she said. When a mother brings a child for the first lesson, Ronda said the child is held, talked to, and always loved. But, once a child is placed in the water she tries to never let him get out of the pool while he's crying- as the scared child inevitably is. "I don't let them out unless they're happy", she said "or the next time they come back, they think they can cry and get out." Ronda has a set of skills which she established as goals for the different aged children who come to her for the lessons. For the youngest pupils she is interested in teaching them to hold Community Springville Community Pool is now taking registration for the third session of Learn to Swim Lesson. At age two and a half to three, Ronda is interested in seeing that a child can pop up and get a breath of air and also that he begins to swim independently of the instructor. To foster independence in the water, Ronda said a child is placed in the water while she steps back. "I step back so the child will have someone to swim to," she explained. "I never swim to the child." Ronda said a child is also taught to swim face down with hands underneath un-derneath the water. "I want them to relax, and swimming underneath the water is more relaxing. She said in reality "I don't particularly care" how they move through the water, as long as they do. "It's hard, though, for them to get it all together, "Ronda said. They have to learn to keep kicking, open their mouths, blow out the old air, and breathe in the new. Ronda said it is often necessary for the very small children to use flippers while learning to swim independently of the teacher. Their feet are either too small or their body weight is too light for them to swim properly, she explained. While Ronda has a set of goals for each child, she said there is no punishment if the child can't attain them. Ronda also said she has the parents get into the water with the child on the last lesson, so the parents can understand what the child's capabilities are. This also allows the child to discover how happy and proud his parents are, which given him a new boost of confidence. Ronda said the merits of the instruction are illustrated by the fact that she has never had a child she couldn't teach using her techniques. Ronda Hickey takes her teaching seriously and has a great deal of pride in her small pupils. The first licensed woman pilot was Baroness Raymonde de la Roche, who learned to fly in 1909.
