Show October 2, 1980 - The Springville Herald - Page Eleven Perils mAe .it tofl tfir Loots imi 46-7 ppse The Springville Red and .Tar Devils football team, led defense, played their their fourth game by by Jetf Strong on offense finest game of the season beating the Payson Lions. Daddy-Daughter Day was played Saturday The first half was a close ballgame. But in the second half, Springville unleashed its powerful offense which racked up forty points in the game. It was the finest demonstration of line control that could have been played. Both the offensive and defensive lines played up to the expectations of Coach Newbury and Coach Jacobsen. Last Saturday was the third annual Daddy-Daughter Daddy-Daughter Football Day at the middle school. This event was planned and presented by Mrs. Lewis and her seventh grade P.E. classes. Each year this program develops. This year was the most successful. There were ap proximately 35 dads who participated with their daughters. Each daddy and daughter were placed on teams together and played in three different games. Each game lasted about 20 minutes. The exercise was great, and the time was well spent. "I'd really like to thank all those dads who came Cr f r-9 v and participated with their daughters. I'd also like to thank those who came with the gals whose fathers were unable to attend. I think everyone had a great time," says Mrs. Lewis. A special thanks goes to those mothers who came to watch and ended up babysitting. Their turn is n " r Springville Ninth Grade downs Mountain View, Payson's only score came with one and a half minutes left on the clock in the first half. As Payson's quarterback, Day, picked apart the Devils secondary with his excellent throws. But in the second half, Day had a little more difficulty in throwing the ball. He only completed two passes and threw one interception, as the Devils secondary stiffed up. Springville's scores came from three rushes by Stuart Nelson, one run from Jeff Strong, one run by Gregg Shipp and a reception by Byran Gilles. The credit must go to the offensive line whose blocking opened up huge holes and gave Jeff Strong excellent pass protection. But, the offensive of-fensive squad was not the only team that played great; The Red Devil defense caused five turnovers and only allowed seven points, which is the best in the division. Rex Reeve was the defensive standout of the game. He recovered three fumbles and had five tackles. The play that best signified the game was the last play. Payson's quarterback threw a pass that was intercepted on the five-yard line by David Holmes, who ran it ninty-five yards for the touchdown with no time left on the clock. The final score was 46 to 7. Springville needed this convincing victory, because this Friday, they play Spanish Fork. It will be Spanish's homecoming and should provide a great game.
