Each time I ride by the old high school and see it gradually being torn down, it's like a piece of my heart was going with it. So many fond memories are wrapped up in those old walls. All my brothers and my sister went to school there. Joe and I met and went to high school together. Fell in love during our school days. Our children went to junior high, then high school and graduated from the same old school. So many fun things and a few sad times come hack to my mind. One special time which is so old I know I'm the only one who remembers it, but then I was one of two most involved. It was 1933 and 34. Joe Miller and I were both seniors. We had had a very strong mutual attraction at-traction for each other ever since w e met in ninth grade, but Joe was very girl shy and f was not about to chase him; we did. however, go on several dates during those years, so by the time we were seniors about every weekend, or if there was a school dance he would ask me lor a date and I always accepted. We didn't go steady, but none the less we went together (There's a difference). As each Monday morning rolled around, I would try to look my best and hope that somehow Joe would give the rest of the kids some indication (hat I was first on his list ol favorite girls, but he never would. He simply would not be pinned down by a girl, not even me. So I played the same game. I would sit with other boys and girls in class and at the assemblies. Joe and I took two afternoon af-ternoon classes together every day. They were Miss B. Finley's English and then Mr. Wingate's physics or chemistry (can't remember which). We had to go from Miss Finley's class in the east front room of the "Old Building'' to - Mr. Wingates class way over in the upstairs of the new-part new-part of the "New-Building" "New-Building" which was a long trek, especially when we went down through the tunnel where our lockers were -then up two flights of stairs -down the main hall. etc. I would walk from one class to the other with my girlfriends and sometimes another boy,, kit never with Joe. Well, this went on all fall, winter and early spring. Weekend dating, then totally ignoring each '.mm t The Super Fall Styles are Here Come See them Now for great selection other at school. Finally one early spring day, Joe waited for me after class at Miss Finley's door and asked me if he could walk me to Mr. Wingate's room. 1 was stunned and I think it nearly killed him, Mercede Angela Goatcs. daughter of Ken and Deborah Harvey (.dales will be one year old on Sept. 7. We stopped at our lockers in the tunnel, then started up the stairs, and in the meantime the news passed like wildfire, "Joe's walking May to class!!" As we came up the stairs to the main hall, I do believe half the boys in the school were lined up on both sides and as we walked by, they closed in around us and chanted and teased all the way up to Mr. Wingate's room, ."Joe's got a girl! Joe's got a girl!" Needless to say, that was my Red Letter Day. Well, that's just one fond memory. I have hundreds of others, as have you former students. So I say farewell, old high school, home of our youth. In behalf of the great times, the good times, the mediocre times and even the bad times, you will always be a precious part of our past.
