Out of a hundred-plus rooms at the Ponderosa, we drew the one next to the generator. It pumped and wheezed and coughed all night. I had driven from Brigham City to Burley last weekend while Jim slept. I also laid and listened to the generator while Jim slept. ..and snored. Some people are lucky enough to be able to sleep through anything. Then there are those of us who lie awake listening to little things like dripping taps, chirping crickets, barking dogs, creeking floors.. .and snoring hubbies.- I can beat mine on the back, hold his nose, plead, "Turn over," and even get up and sleep on the sofa most of the night, and he just keeps on snoring. When I drive, he sleeps. When he drives, I read aloud. Makes the time go faster on long trips. Last November when we went to Illinois to visit our son, I was reading Agatha Cristie's "Curtain" and the miles were really ticking off fast. I had been reading aloud for six hours and we could scarcely wait to see what Was going to happen next. But darn, we reached our destination with a couple of chapters left to go. I couldn't put it down, though, so after everybody else was in bed and asleep, I crept silently off to the bathroom to see who murdered whom. When I finished, I turned out the light and made my way across the kitchen in a sort of zombie walk, hands outstretched, feeling as I went. I couldn't see a thing, and being in unfamiliar surroundings, I didn't exactly know where I was going. Everything was super quiet. I mean Jim wasn't even breathing heavily, much less snoring. But just as I reached the hide-a-bed where we were supposed to sleep, he let out a most unearthly, gutteral, gurgling snort. And for a minute there, I thought it was the "Curtain" "Cur-tain" for me!
