JV baseball team records three wins By Sean Francis The Springville Red Devil Junior Varsity baseball team began its season by winning three straight games, with the wins coming over Provo, and Payson twice. The junior Devils, who are coached by William Salisbury, started their season off with a bang, as they beat Provo 7-2. The Devils had 7 hits, with Jeff Strong, a sophomore, getting two singles to lead the hitting cor. Springville's pitching was also impressive, as Bert McClain, Jeff Strong and Brett Cochran struck out a total of 11 Provo batters, bat-ters, and limited the. Bulldogs to only four hits. Springville recorded their second "win in a squeaker against the Payson Lions, winning 3-2. 3-2. Rob Lee was the leading hitter for the Devils, as -he hit safely twice. Again, the Devils' pitching was admirable, as the same three struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits. Last Wednesday, the Devils blasted the Lions, winning 10-1 in a laugher. Every Devil hit safely, and fine pitching again carried the Devils. The junior varsity team doesn't get much recognition, but those who wish to see a preview of near future varsity teams would be wise to make an occasion of witnessing young baseball players in action. By Sean Francis The opening game of the Region Six Baseball race was not an enjoyable one for the Springville Red Devils, as they dropped a frustrating 8-7 decision against bitter rival Provo. The loss evened the team's season record to 2-2, and put one loss mark up on their Region Six record. The Devils' next game will be Monday, when they meet league favorites Pleasant Grove in a road game at 4 p.m. The team was idle this week, as its only scheduled game was cancelled because of a misunderstanding complicated com-plicated by bad weather. Springville jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, as leadoff hitter Kelly Smith blasted a double, Mark Averett reached on an error, and both scored on another error. However, Provo rushed back in the bottom half of the second inning, as they scored four runs on two hits. Devil Pitcher Tony Ferguson was having acute control problems, and the resulting base runners flooded in on a combination of timely hits and untimely errors. The Bulldogs again countered with run in the third, and held a 5-2 lead. Brad Cox popped an opposite field double in the top of the fourth inning in-ning for Springville, AT DESERET FEDERAL Your first 3-Piece Place Setting of Elegant FINE PORCELAIN CHINA Start something beautiful. Niki Pino kept Provo on pace, though, in their half, as he also walked and scored on a John Marrot fluke single over the infield. This kept the lead at 6-3, but the Devils' half of the fifth inning made the game much more interesting. The big inning started off with Mike Bulow, Springville's third hitter, walking off Provo pitcher Paul Francom. Cary Hansen then lashed an infield single, with Bulow advancing to third. Sean Francis next lined a hard shot off the tip of Provo's third baseman's glove, scoring Bulow. After the next Springville batter struck out, Ken Howell got on on an error, which scored both Hansen and Francis. The remaining two Devil basemen were put out by Provo, but Springville had tied the score at 6-6. The bottom of the sixth inning was a nightmare for Springville, as they saw a 7-6 lead (accounted for by an unearned run in their half) dissolve into an 8-7 deficit because of a costly one out error and consecutive doubles off the wall in left field by the Bulldogs. Gary DeHaas, who had pitched respectably for Springville for four innings, in-nings, began to tire noticeably, and the long balls spelled his end, 'and ultimately, the Devils' end. Todd Whiting rapped his first hit of the game to open the inning, and advanced to third on the subsequent two-bagger by Kenny Howell. So, with none away and men on second and third base, things looked awful rosy for Springville. But,Garth Felix, the next batter could only dribble a roller to the pitcher Francom, and he easily threw out a streaking Whiting at the plate. Brad Cox then came to the plate, and hit a grounder to Mike Olpin, playing third base. Again, the runner 6h third base went home, and, yes, again, Provo easily cut him down at the plate. Kelly Smith then struck out to end the game, and what seemed surely at least a tie, became a frustrating and infuriating in-furiating loss. Springville had six total hits, with no Devil getting more than one safelv. Provo had eight hits, with the shortstop Mathews going three for four. home sports afield NOTICE Did you know?
