Show Devils fake Don defeat Showing the efforts that have been put into a strong community supported sup-ported wrestling program Spanish Fork defeated Springville's Red Devils. Led by Alan Albright, their fine second year coach, the Dons overcame over-came an early Springville lead to take the match by a margin of 7 to 5. The final point total was 33-18 in favor of Spanish Fork, but the final point difference dif-ference was a result of some fine pins by the Spanish Fork crew. Springville scored early behind the fine efforts of Kendall Wilson and Bruce Jenkins who won their matches at 98 to 105. But Spanish Fork came back with wins at 112, 119, and 126. Scott Harmer, Scott Waters, and Brian Waters; who wrestled those weights for the Springville team, did some very fine wrestling, but LaFontaine, Allen and Griffin of Spanish Fork are strong region champion contenders in their weight divisions and all three of them wrestled in top form. Then Springville team Captain Robert Rawle, wrestled one of his better matches of the yearand defeated Spanish Fork's Mike Hales at 132. His two brilliant take-downs were the key factors in the win. The next match was between David Perkins and Spanish Fork's studentbody president, Wendell Robertson. David worked hard but Robertson showed his senior's experience and came on strong to win in the final rounds. Jeff Fisk, Springville's other team captain, wrestled a high scoring match with junior Joseph Meldrum. Meldrum was a very game young man, but Fisk countered his moves with such finesse that he won on a 14-11 decision. The following three matches were Spanish Fork's although Nelson, Hafen and Oliver gave it a good try. With pins scored by Braff and Hanson, and the decision at 167 by Argyle, Spanish Fork sewed up the match. However, senior Robert Ames helped make the point total look better and gave the visiting fans something to cheer about when he finished the match with a pin over Richard Ellsworth in the heavyweight division. The loss dropped their record to 2-3 in Region Six and 6-3 on the season. The devils will meet thp Dixie Flyers tonight, in what will be the inaugural Region Six battle between the two teams. Payson will invade the Devil den Friday, looking for their first region win in what so far has been a terrible season. Both games will be held at 7:30 in the Devil's gym. The first quarter was a nightmare for Springville, as they turned the ball over 10 times. American Fork capitalized on these mistakes, hitting 11 of an incredible 23 shots. Six Cavemen scored, while Jon Larson with nine points was the top scorer. Springville was severely outrebounded, and at one point was behind by the score of 21-4. The quarter ended with the score 23-10 for the Cavemen. The second quarter was the exact opposite of the first, and gave the large crowd of Devil supporters something to cheer for. Chris Mecham of Springville had the hot hand, hitting four of four shots from the field, and Springville quickly closed the margin to 6 at 23-17. Dave Larsen and Cary Hansen also contributed to the Devil scoring, but Gary Beck, the Cavemen's 6-6 junior center, popped in 8 points, and Springville only managed to cut the lead to 8 at the half 40-32. The third quarter was another disaster for Springville, as again turnovers plagued the Devils, and American Fork broke away to an 18 point lead. Gary Beck again killed Springville, making 9 more points, and Jamie Burgess put in 8, and the Devils were behind 63-45. Kevin Hatfield, who had not played in the first half, came off the bench in the second half to score 13 points and pull down 9 rebounds in a great performance. Un-fortunatey Un-fortunatey for the Devils, Kevin was the only player for Springville having such a good night. The fourth quarter was much the same as the Junior Varsity game, as both teams emptied their benches, giving the younger players experience. ex-perience. Robb Thomas and Alan Preston both scored for Springville while several of American Fork's substitutes sub-stitutes also scored. Gary Beck led all scorer with 22 points, with Jamie Burgess chipping in 18 and Jon Larson 11 for the Cavemen. Hatfield led Springville with 13, and Dave Larsen had 11. Gary Hansen, who had a good night shooting, came up with 10 points. Register Now! Quality Programs of Saturday Ski Instruction For Youth, Teenagers, Adults, and Families for people who love skiing... Mar. 11.25 Wrestling team needs ; support too J r ""January 12, 1978 - The Springville Herald The question that parents of boys on the wrestling team would like answered is, "why is there so much difference in the level of support given to the football and basketball teams and that given to the wrestling team? "Wrestling is not in its infancy. It is a bonifide athletic program that calls for a special type of young maa He must be hard working, intelligent, and a fierce competitor. He must be able to work closely with his coach and other team members, and above all, he must face another individual his own size and weight in a very personal way. When he walks off the mat there are few alibis. He has to face winning or losing on his own. There are no team members to blame and only personal courage to make him return to practice the next day to try again. And as in all sports, you win some and you lose some. Still, wrestling is exciting ex-citing to watch! It allows all twelve team members to participate. There are no bench warmers. In towns where there has been great support by the school administration the program has thrived. In fact, cities like Pleasant Grove, Spanish Fork, Payson, Vernal, Delta, and several areas to the north, have programs that draw as many people as do the basketball or football programs. Perhaps it is because those teams have earned town and school support. If that is the case then perhaps our own Springville High School team should have strong support. These boys have dedicated themselves as much as any of our fine young men. They started wrestling many years before they got to high school. If they hadn't they would have no chance against wrestlers from the above mentioned schools. The young wrestlers spent many hours on their own traveling to Federation Meets where they could get experience and compete, even if it was at a serious disadvantage. There was no coach. There was little school support, but there was a lot of discouragement at every corner. At the same time, these young men looked and saw a fine junior high basketball program being carried on with the full support of the administration. ad-ministration. Basketball uniforms were provided, facilities were made available, and referees were even hired to help the young men develop their skills. Still, a program of sorts was started for the young men who were interested in wrestling. They were finally allowed to sign up for a limited community school program which they could pay for themselves. And to the young men's credit, they even appreciated that help. Now those same young men are on the high school team. They have worked hard. It would seem that they are paying the price, and with the help of very fine young coaches they are meeting with a good deal of success. suc-cess. So where is the support? Where are the cheerleaders? Where is the Pep Club? Where is the studentbody? Aren't these young men just as worthy of a good program as the basketball team? Aren't there some fine young ladies who would really like to cheerlead or support our team as Spanish Fork, Pleasant Grove, and Payson are supported. Aren't there some administrators who would like to support some worthy young men in a way that they should be supported. Couldn't they, with our help if necessary, develop a program that will encourage en-courage people to show up at the school gym on match nights. Perhaps, better, family ticket prices, more opportunities op-portunities for other girls to be cheerleaders or pep team members, and equal treatment and recognition of the wrestlers themselves would be a good place to start.
