Scott Phillips, a Springville All-State quarterback last year, competing for Brigham Young University's football team. Scott, in his freshman year at the Y, has been converted to a tailback, as the Cougars decided to utilize the great speed and running ability Scott showed while leading Springville to a share of the Region Six championship cham-pionship in 1976. The Cougars, who have been nationally ranked all year long, lost a big game when they fell to Arizona State last Saturday, but if there were any bright spots in the game, one was the fine play of Phillips. Scott, who has seen a lot of action playing behind Roger Fourley at the tailback position, was the leading receiver in the game for BYU, and made numerous runs for good yardage. Most of his receptions were on swing passes, and he had ample time to display his shifty running style and speed. On one such pass near the end of the game, with the Cougars down 24-7, Scott caught a pass from Mark Wilson, BYU's quarterback, quar-terback, cut clear across the grain of the fled, and made his finest run of the year, picking up more than 60 yards, and almost scored. The touchdown wasn't to be denied him however, as on the next play he scooted around the right end for his third touchdown of the year. Gourley was injured in the game Saturday, and he'll be out for the rest of the season, so it looks like Scott will have his best opportunity yet to thrill and excite BYU and hometown fans alike as he paves his way to a promising career with the Courgars. s OFF REGULAR PRICE! The sturctures are the graphic arts building at Springville High School, the automotive instructional in-structional building at Spanish Fork High School, and the electronics elec-tronics buildings and Payson High School. The district was able to have the buildings erected without cost through a "sales tax savings strategy." "Public school systems in Utah are not required by law to pay sales taxes," said Nebo School District Assistant Superintendent, Errol Smith. However, Nebo school officials decided several years ago that they were paying sales taxes "in a big way," according to Smith. He explained that every time the district built a school, the contractors con-tractors were paying sales taxes on the materials they used in the construction. When the contractor gave the school district his bill, the sales taxes were included, in-cluded, he added. So when the new Spanish Fork Middle and Junior High School, Payson Junior High School and the Art City and Springville Middle School in Springville were built, the district bought the materials-without paying sales taxes. To get the building done, the district simply contracted basically for the construction labor. But where was Nebo District going to store all the construction materials it purchased? "We built warehouses at Springville, Spanish Fork, an Payson," said Smith. "These were not ordinary warehouses, though," he said. "These warehouses were built so they could ultimately be used for school instructional in-structional purposes." The warehouse at Payson is now being used For !! 560ilS-4S0ai3 Plut F I T. 45' Exch. thM UIt ftnfy $1.72 Saturday If Mi WrYs SIZE F.E.T. Smith said the savings from not paying sales taxes on materials for the four new schools was enough to pay for the three warehouses that have been converted to school use. Smith said the savings from not paying sales taxes on materials for the four new schools was enough to pay for two and part of a third warehouse that will be converted to school use. He said an estimated $37,000 was saved in unpaid sales taxes on materials for the Spanish Fork Middle and Junior High School; $32,000 was saved that way on the Payson Junior High School; $25,000 will be saved on the Art City Elementary School and $45,000 will be saved on Springville Middle and Jr. High School. The warehouse now used for electronics instruction in-struction at Payson cost $58,800 for construction; the automotive building at Spanish Fork cost $35,000; and the graphic arts building at Springville cost $106,000.
