Main, Sprinqvjlle Childhood ills still strike kids The belief that "childhood" diseases are preventable and therefore a thing of the past, "is not entirely true," according to State health officials. The so called "Childhood" diseases-mumps, diseases-mumps, measles and whooping cough are still around and occasionally infect adults and children that have not been inoculated. Some parents have become lax in making sure their children receive necessary immunizations im-munizations for preventing many diseases. Studies indicate that large groups of children and even adults are not protected against a number of preventable diseases. So there is still a potential for outbreaks of diseases such as diptheria measles and polio. District Health Director , Wayne LeBaron, urges parents who have children entering en-tering school in two weeks, to make sure they receive all the required immunizations. Utah law requires that "children entering school for the first time must present acceptable evidence that they have completed or are in the process of completing immunizations (shots) against diptheria pertusis (whooping cough), tetanus, polio, measles and rubella (german measles). Utah law requires a minimum of four DPT or TD, three polio, one measles and one rubella shot. Several questions have arisen in the past few months concerning the 7 Alex Haley to be awarded honorary doctorate at 6YU Author Alex Haley A prominent American writer and family historian, and a Salt Lake City businessman and community leader will be awarded honorary doctoral degrees at the summer Commencement exercises at Brigham Young University Friday, August 19. President Dallin H. Oaks announced that Alex P. Haley, author of "Roots," and Joseph Rosenblatt, president, of Eimco Corporation for more than 40 years, will be awarded honorary degrees in ceremonies beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Marriott Center. Mr. Rosenblatt will deliver the Commencement address. The public is invited to attend the Commencement Com-mencement exercises. After retiring from the Coast Guard in 1959, Mr. Haley began a new career proper timing of vaccinations vac-cinations in babies. One important question asked most frequently regards young children who have received measles vaccine before the age of 15 months. State health officials advise "anyone whose child was inoculated for measles before the age of 15 months-even those children who received vaccine after 1970- to be re-inoculated. "If the vaccine is given earlier than 15 months, the presence of passively acquired maternam antibody may suppress active antibody response," explained Gary West, Salt Lake City Health Department. Almost overnight, ancestor-hunting became the third most popular hobby in America, behind stamp-collecting and coin -collecting. "Roots" has probably done more to focus American attention at-tention on genealogy and on the significance of family traditions and histories than any other event in American history. Floribunda roses bear their flowers in clusters, and the individual blooms of many closely resemble hybrid teas. They are increasing in popularity, especially for bed plantings where large numbers of flowers are wanted. As a. rule floribunda varieties are hardy - they will tolerate more neglect than any other type of rose with the possible exception of some of the shrub species. While some are fine for cutting, they will not replace hybrid teas for this purpose.
