Fish Lake gets shrimp transplant Hungry trout at Fish Lake in Sevier County just had their diet supplemented by transplant of an additional 500,000 oppossum shrimp, according to Arnold Bangerter, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Fisheries biologist The opossum shrimp (Mysis relicta) were taken from Twin Lakes near Leadville, Colorado, with the cooperation of the Colorado Game, Fish and Parks. The primary purpose of the transplant is to supply forage for trout This most recent effort was the third transplant of shrimp. The first was in 1970. Bangerter said that the transplants are intended to provide support to the lake's food web and that the shrimp will hopefully establish themselves them-selves as a self-propagating population. Colorado sources have indicated that even if the shrimp are successful in establishing themselves, it will be as many as five to eight years before the population can be' relocated. Original studies of Fish Lake indicated t that existing zooplankton were sufficient for smaller fish, but aquatic and terrestrial insect life necessary for continued growth in larger trout was not available. The opossum shrimp have proven to bridge this food chain in othe lakes. 1.00 - v, -fr 'r .
