Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Guy Norton of Springville and Mr. and Mrs. Denton Topham of Spanish Fork. The faculty of Grant School have always felt that reading is the most important academic skill to be taught in the elementary grades. They have developed a wide variety of programs to meet the needs of individuals, such as Hoffman systems, the language experience ex-perience approach, basal reading groups, many phonic and manipulative programs, etc. To help add more excitement and fun to reading they are planning some special activities during the next month. A drive will be made to encourage en-courage every child to become a library card holder. Each class will visit the city library to get acquainted with the facility and learn how to properly use it. All those children who do not now have a card will be given a form of application to take home and complete. The school will then have regular follow-up days to visit the library to return books and pick out new ones. Hopefully, parents will encourage the children to read their library books at home. Reading together as a family helps the children to develop good attitudes toward reading. Cancer film to be shown here A one-hour special entitled "Why Me?" in which ten women relate their personal encounters with breast cancer, will be aired nationally for the first time Monday night, November 24. It will be seen locally on KUED Channel 7 at 8 p.m. The program includes a demonstration of breast self-examination. The documentary was made available for PBS broadcast by a grant from the 3M Company and is narrated by actress Lee Grant. Most of the women interviewed in-terviewed not only recovered from breast cancer, but went on to become American Cancer Society "Reach to Recovery" volunteers. Following the network special, there will be a live half hour discussion program on breast cancer featuring Dr. Charles R. Smart, Chief of Surgery, at the LDS Hospital, Virginia Conkling, a medical social worker and Carolyn Evans, Chairman of "Reach to Recovery" for the Utah Division of the American Cancer Society. The discussion will be interspersed in-terspersed with film clips of a "Reach to Recovery" training session and of a visit by a volunteer to a mastectomy patient in the hospital. Viewers will be invited to call in questions to the American Cancer Society offices in Salt Lake City (at. 521-7660), Ogden (393-1110), and Provo (373-5886), and Utah County 374-9905, where "Reach to Recovery" volunteers will man the phones from 8 to 10 p.m. They will furnish information in-formation and offer free literature on breast cancer, including a pamphlet entitled "How to Examine your Breasts". In Salt Lake, A. G. Edwards and Sons, Inc. has donated the use of their office and phones so that more callers can be served. For information prior to the television viewing', calls may be made to the Cancer Society at 377-5886 or Mrs. Boyd Smeath in Springville 489-6044. r&tt LESSONS WITH PURCHASE OF MATERIAL Macrame, dip and drapedolls, plastic items. : Many more craft supplies.
