The program developed by Dr. Grant Von Harrison, an instructional psychologist has been successful because it is simple and inexpensive, yet so powerful it can teach an illiterate person to read in just a few weeks. Ray Brown, director of the project for the San Juan School District, said, "We have been very happy with the program. It is a quick means of remediating the childrea" So far, approximately 870 gradeschool children and about 70 junior high age children, over' half of whom are Navajo Indians, In-dians, have participated in the program in Blanding and surrounding towns. The project is being funded federally under the Title I program. According to Dr. Harrison, test data collected by the school district since 1965 indicate that' many Indian children were not at grade level in reading and spelling. But in 1972 the district started using the tutoring program for children in the second grade. In just one year, the district reported that most Indian' children were reading and spelling at or above grade level. One third grade teacher reported that for the first time in his teaching experience in the district, one-half of those assigned to the highest reading group were Indian children. One of the best things about the program, said Mr. Brown, is that non-professionals can serve as tutors. In the San Juan district, a large share of the 67 tutors employed in the program are Navajo parents. INTEREST RATES $RE HIGH THIS VEAR.
