Show Page Twelve The Springville Herald January 17, 1974 IS LISTEREX 1 lAGNAIPPE ACM SCRUB By Betty McMillan Have you written to your congressman, respresentative or state representative lately? Bet most of us have not done so. It has just come to mind that how on earth do we who sit back and gripe at everything and expect our lawmakers to do anything at all if they do not know of our wishes. Anyone who had not made their wishes officially (at least) known has no more right to protest than does the ones who did not vote at all in the last presidential election have a right to gripe about the president. One must make themselves heard if they expect to stand up and be counted. Sure we should not all expect for our lawmakers to vote the exact way we as an individual may wish it, but if we made our wishes known, it just could be that that one letter or telegram, may make the lawmaker realize just how many letters or telegrams have arrived on this subject. : Right now we have so many issues at stake that I think a little less fussing and fighting and a little more action-taking and thought should be the order of the day. A thing that really gets me is for instance, down south you will hear these "old red-necked east texas farmers" with the slicked-down Roy Rogers haircuts, drawl" wal, ah'm a democrat becuz, Mah paw was one as wuz his paw before him?" Now what kind of reasoning is that? Funny thing I hear the same thing about being a republican from the same type of people here in Utah, only the drawl is different. One must learn to think for himself or herself and choose the best man for the office, phooey with all of these different parties. During my 45 years I have seen two good men assassinated for political reasons. Everyone knows about Kennedy so we will leave that one alone. - The other great man was Huey P. Long of Louisiana. His demise, in a maze of bullets right in the halls of the state capitol was by no madman, but ;by a political-church group that realized they had to stop him or he would break the hold of those parties on that state, as he was fast doing. I was only a small child when this happened, but do remember the uproar caused by it. Books have been written about this man and movies made, but many leave a false impression that he was a potential dictator, which is untrue. He simply was a nian doing what he thought was right for the people of his state and country, and what more can one ask. We have one in the highest office of our land now that has been kicked around until it is pitiful, only to create a smoke screen for the dogs a-nipping in the background. 4 As a man said the other day, to save the energy crisis, the media that is yelling energy crisis should try practicing what they preach. Many of these news commentators can state what they mean in half as many words as they use and therefore get off of the air sooner for other news of importance. Like when the president gives a speech, they rehash and tear it apart for the next two hours like a gang of dogs over a bone. Then, although I am a newspaper writer, myself, in the cities, I cannot see the need for four and five editions of the paper. In most of these extra editions only a few articles on the front page and "jump" page are changed, as the rest of the entire paper had been printed either the day before or earlier in the morning. Now back to my favorite subject these days- I still am against day-light saving time. If only someone would explain to my feeble and warped brain, what we are saving, maybe I could understand a bit better. Seems all that is happening is school children are getting run over in cars by the motorists who did not see them. The officials suggest buying the child lighter colored clothing- this is fine, but now about those persons who have five or six school children instead of just one. I do not expect that it would be an easy thing to run out and buy all new clothing for that many children when probably it had just been bought about Christmas time or before. ? Read where they have changed the daylight saving time in Connecticut because several children and one policeman had been hit by cars. Seems to be the first state with some sense. By the way did you know that the sun rises 40 minutes earlier in Denver than it does here. How about that? Food for thought anyway. I gripe about this because I am a night people. You know there are day people and there are night people. Scientists have proven this. Seems day people are early-to-bedders and early-risers and have reached their working peak by 2 p.m. and are then on the down grade in proficiency. Then the night people are late-to-bedders and would love to be late risers, but the world is geared for only day people. The night people stumble around till 10 or 11 a.m., but really reach their working peak about 2 p.m. in the afternoon, then stay so until 11 p.m. or midnight. Several years ago Readers Digest had an article on this subject and I was glad to realize that I am simply a night people instead of "lazy" or a "nocturnal animal". Again the gems of wisdom department. A New York newspaperman said "There is an air of im-permanence im-permanence about a government job these days. As one White House aide expressed it. 'I really don't mind having my name written on the door in chalk. What bugs me is the big wet sponge hanging beside it." ' The tail of the jumping mouse is six inches long, about two-thirds two-thirds of the total length of the animal. Birth defects affect the daily lives of about 15 million Americans, the March of Dimes reports.
