It was made in Severn I hours, suns pattern, by simply folding a three yard length of 45" material in hulf. She marked renter fold for a neek slash, then popped it over her head. Plaring a pin midway between elbow and underarm, she seamed both sides down on an angle. The result: a free-form, flowing, easy to look at dasliiki-lype gown with a matching tote bag. Simple to sew and smashing to look at. Her companion is wearing 100 cotton, riblrss corduroy quilted effect jacket with matching flared slacks. Mothers are prone to neglect neg-lect their own meals while tending tend-ing the family, or because they are figure-conscious without understanding un-derstanding the basics of figure . control. Mothers need an adequate, ade-quate, balanced diet just like the rest of us, perhaps more so. You need calcium regularly from foods such as dairy foods. If you don't get enough calcium, your body will use calcium from your bones, and they may become weak and break easily. This is especially true for older people. You need protein everyday, too. ' Reg FORSEY 1 40 North Main Street, Spanish Fork m ' LA CARTE Without enough protein in your meals, your body will use some of its own tissue for upkeep. Why are bread and cereal important im-portant as one of the four food groups? It's because this group furnishes B-vitamins, iron and some protein. When breads are made with milk, they also give you the additional values of milk. Being carbohydrate foods, breads and cereals are important, too, as energy foods. Even people who are trying to lose weight need some fats in their meals. Fats are very tasty and any dull food flavor can be improved by the right fat. For the first lime in 12 years the entire family, including in-cluding four adopted children, got together for a reunion. The affair, commemorating 'adoption night' which was, coincidentally, Christmas Eve, December 24th, of 1951, was held at the Provo Police Clubhouse. Attending were forty-five, these being sons, daughters, adopted sons and daughter, their , spouses, and children. Included were Janet Robinson, Robin-son, Linda Bowers, Robert Ogilvie, and Anne Bennett, their spouses and children, Iwo foster Indian children, and Gary, Bahne, Yvonne, John, and Paul Ogilvie, and Mrs. Gary Ogilvie and children. A gala time was had by all, however, Christmas day, young Paul Ogilvie received a surprise and, we presume, not too welcome gift, in the form of an emergency appendectomy! At latest reports, he was doing 'just fine' meat, for example, also helps make it tender. Don't fear fats. Just make sure you get a variety of different fats in your meals and don't let them run your calorie cal-orie intake too high. Need help in encouraging your family to eat vegetables? Try serving vegetables raw as well as cooked. Children especially may like such finger foods as carrot sticks, celery or cucumber sticks, green pepper strips, or cauli-flawercttes. cauli-flawercttes. If the kids help to prepare the vegetable, this too may perk up their appetites. According to a widely held belief, be-lief, teenagers are determined to do differently than their parents. But research studies show that many young people still rely on their parents, particularly mother, for food preferences. So, parents, set a good example. Base your meals on a wide variety of commonly com-monly available foods, and not too many calories. Is it true that too much calcium in the diet can cause arthritis, that the excess calcium becomes deposited in the joints? As a physician I have probably faced that question as often as any that patients ask. The question ques-tion is posed in terms of the patient pa-tient himself, or herself, on behalf be-half of a friend or relative. There are, after all, so many people with arthritis that the question comes up at some time or other in almost every family. "Aunt Mary got rid of her arthritis by drinking lots of grapefruit juice." At one time, the theory was popular popu-lar that too much protein in the diet might be responsible for arthritic conditions in the body. Calcium Is Vital But I hasten to tell you that calcium is a vital and necessary mineral in our meals. And an excessive ex-cessive intake of calcium will not cause calcium deposits in the joints. And it will not cause arthritis. arth-ritis. The fact is, the body has the ability to absorb only as much calcium as it needs. If anything, having sufficient calcium in your diet is a good thing. You see, there is no diet that will cause or cure arthritis. But it is important if you do have arthritis to get an adequate diet in terms of all nutrients, nu-trients, and perhaps calcium more than any. Good nutrition, prescribed pre-scribed exercise, and adequate rest are all part of treating arthritis. arth-ritis. So, is someone tells you drinking drink-ing milk is bad for arthritis, or can cause it, don't you believe it. Overweight is to be avoided to minimize stress on the weight-bearing weight-bearing joints. But good nutrition is to be maintained by a balanced diet chosen from the milk group, the meat group, fruits and vegetables, vege-tables, breads and cereals. Happy New Vear Everyone! As pets, cats are delightful creatures. They are quietly affectionate, af-fectionate, well mannered, independent; in-dependent; they possess beauty, beau-ty, grace and noble dignity. Though easily trained and cared for, cats are discriminating discrimina-ting eaters. They prefer day-to-day variety, and at room temperature, please. Fortunately, catering to their gourmet tastes is both easy and economical today. There is a wide selection of good commercial cat foods on the market. Scientifically formulated, formula-ted, these are superior to a table-scraps diet of uncertain nutritional value. Blaine Ostler, Mapleton's Some commercial foods combine com-bine the desired high protein content with all the essential vitamins and minerals your cat is known to need for daily maintenance. Some others, however, do not; these foods are best used for occasional feeding or for mixing with the maintenance type food. But you don't have to guess which is which.
