Springville 489-6681 489-4588 Results issued on drug problem from survey in Utah high schools A statewide survey conducted in Utah's junior and senior high schools has revealed the nature and extent of drug usage among Utah's young people. The drug assessment, directed by the General Education Division of the Utah State Board of Education, involved survey responses from sonie30,000 Utah youngsters in grades 7 through 12. The survey was funded through the 1971-72 Utah Drug Education Project, a federally sponsored program. Purpose of the survey was to update educa.ors and others working with students and drug related problems. The studeits answered the anonymous questionnaire administered ad-ministered by local schools during the latter part of the 1971-72 1971-72 school year. The assessment covered thie; phases of the drug scene: drup usage, altitudes towards drugs, and drug knowledge. The first phase data on usage has been compiled, while the phases on attitudes and knowledge will be released at a later date. According to the usage phase of the survey involving more than 10,000 students, drug usage has increased among students since a similar survey was taken in 1969. While the two surveys are not similar in every respect, general conclusions can be made concerning drug usage. For instance, it appears that in 1969, 12.2 percent of older students (mostly senior high) in public schools were involved in the use of marijuana. The 1972 survey reports that 18.4 percent of junior and senior high school students have now used marijuana one or more times, an increase of 6.2 percent. The use of speed (uppers), however, has only increased 0.7 percent during the same period. The use of solvents such as glue has increased 2.1 percent since 1969 while the use of hallucinogens (LSD for example) shows a similar 2 percent increase. The drug assessment questioned students about their experience with seven different types of drugs. Students reported alcohol to be the most widely used drug. When it comes to "hard narcotics" such as heroin only three percent of all students questioned claimed to have used them at all. Eleven percent of the student population taking part in the survey reported using stimulating drugs such as amphetamines. Seven percent reported the use of hallucinogenic drugs like LSD. Thirteen percent claimed usage to some extend of depressants such as sleeping pills while nine percent said they had sniffed solvents like glue or gas. The survey indicates that the critical age for initial use or experimentation with drugs is during the 7 through 10 grades. Initial use of drugs occurring after (he sophomore year of high school is relatively infrequent. Curiosity is far and away the most often reported reason for trying drugs. "Seeking a new kick or thrill" and "expecting a pleasure" are other frequently reported reasons for trying drugs. Most students felt that regular use of drugs in any of the seven categories is dangerous to a person's emotional and social well being. In fact, ninety-three percent fell that the regular use of hard narcotics was dangerous while sixty-two percent fell that the regular use of alcohol was dangerous. The assessment revealed that most drugs are easily obtained. Almost half the students placed marijuana and depressants in the "no difficulty obtaining" category. A large percentage of students, however, didn't know how or where to obtain drugs. Sixty percent, for instance, answered "I don't know" regarding the availability of hard narcotics. Students surveyed overwhelmingly over-whelmingly rejected the legalization of marijuana. Seventy-five percent felt that the laws controlling the use of niarijuana should be either ""kept as they are" (19 percent) or "made more strict" (56 percent). Twenty percent of the students surveyed felt that alcohol should be "made legal for those 18 and over." It takes 50,000 pounds of engineering drawings to build a jet airliner.
