No. 31 is Chris Jensen, 11 is Sellout for Utah ys Aggie game on Cougar floor Saturday will mark the 143 meeting of the Utah State University Aggies and the Brigham Young University Cougars on the basketball hardwoods and the largest crowd in the history of their meeting will be on hand to witness the contest. BYU holds a 75-67 game edge since 1919. In the new Marriott Activities Center, the sell-out crowd of 22,700 will cheer for their favorite team in the non-WAC contest. BYU won the Logan contest 87-84 in the final seconds with a basket and foul toss by BYU's outstanding player, Kresimir Cosic. The Aggies play Utah this evening before journeying jour-neying to Provo Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 with the Freshman contest starting at 5 p.m. between the two schools. The Aggie frosh won 89-86 at Logan. Coach Stan Watts and his assistants, Glen Potter and Pete Witbeck, will try to get the Cougars ready for the two home games this weekend. The 67-61 win over Utah last Saturday was far from being the Cougars' best performance, especially in the first half. BYU shot only 33 percent from the field in the first half and gave up 11 turnovers. Watts attributed the lacklustre performance to "trying too hard." No changes are anticipated in the Cougar lineup this weekend, which means that sophomore forward Belmont Anderson (6-3) is a likely starter. Hoop fans urged to be punctual BYU basketball fans are being asked to be in their seats for the tipoff of all Cougar home games, or run the risk of missing the first part of the game. He hit 30 points in the two games, 14 in the Lehi contest and 16 in the Payson game besides clearing 22 boards for the Devils. He is a junior at the high school this year and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Hansen. Henceforth, said University officials, fans will not be allowed in the seating areas while the game is in progress. Fans who are not seated prior to the tipoff will have to wait for a time-out before they can be seated. Officials said a restatement of the policy was necessary because of complaints of many fans in the new 22,700-seat Marriott Center. The same seating policy was in practice while the Cougars were playing their games in the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse. Both Orem and Provo are currently tied for top spot with American Fork, all with 4-1 records while the Devils are only one game behind with a 3-2 count. While both visiting teams will be favored over the Red Devils Coach Elliott Jordan will be gunning for an upset come Friday and Wednesday nights. Junior varsity games will precede the 8 o'clock contests. Drop close one In two games during the past week the Devils won one and lost one, the latter to Payson on the Lion's floor in a well played contest and one in which the Devils could have won with a few better shots at the basket and particularly at the charity line where they hit a miserable 9 of 23 attempts and less turnovers. The Lions won 66-61, behind the shooting of Gary Weight, who hit 23. Craig Pabst for the Devils matched the performance with a big 23 also. The win kept the Lion's record unblemished to date. Springville held a 16-14 first quarter advantage, but in the second quarter with Weight sitting on the bench with three fouls, the Red Devils switched defenses in hopes of adding more pressure to the Lion attack but instead it worked in reverse and, with Pabst also getting in foul trouble and Hansen sitting out for the same reason, the Lions rang up 14 counters in a row before the Devil offense came back to life. The difference was too much and even though the Devils outscored them 17-14 in the final quarter, they missed too many foul shots and a couple of baskets to drop the contest. Mike Hansen had his best game of the year for the Devils scoring 16 points and getting several rebounds during the contest. Jensen with 9 and Davies with 8 played well also. Quarter scores: Springville 16, 26, 44, 61; Payson 14, 30, 52, 66. Devils whip Lehi Last Wednesday night Coach Jordan's Red Devils came up with one of their best team efforts ef-forts to date to hand the visiting Lehi Pioneers a 68-55 defeat. Capt. Robert Gardner moved in quickly after the opening tip went to the Devils to chalk up the first basket of the game. Roger Davies, who played one of his better games, added another basket and Pabst connected for a 6-1 lead. Lehi's McStay tossed in a basket and a setup while Springville's Mike Hansen hit for two as the gap was closed to 8-5. Hansen added another field goal and a foul toss and Jensen swished a beauty from the side while Lehi hit three foul tosses to trail 11-7 with 3:17 left in the quarter. Jensen got another side basket and Davies tanked two more buckets while the Pioneers came up with three more foul Bantam League plays tonight; results posted Tonight's Bantam basketball league games at the National Guard Armory will see Snow Dairy meeting Friels in the 6 o'clock game with Superior Asphalt playing Art City Lanes in the 7:30 contest. Lehi outscored them 14-10 during this quarter before the Devils found themselves again in the final period when Craig Pabst came to life with 10 sizzling points and Hansen and Cooksey added 4 each for the win. Four Devils hit in double figures with Pabst getting 17, Hansen and Jensen 14 each and Davies 12. Peck and Cooper tallied 16 and 15 for the losers. ( 1 Y game times are changed Time changes in two basketball games involving Brigham Young University were announced today by head coach and athletic director Stan Watts. The Cougars' Jan. 24 game with Athletes in Action has been scheduled for a 5 p.m. tipoff. The early start, Watts explained, is necessary so that it will not interfere with Family Home Evening activities on Monday night. Tipoff for the BYU-Utah game Feb. 19 in Provo has been scheduled for 3:40 p.m. The Cougar-Ute battle was moved to an afternoon game, because it is being televised regionally as a WAC game of the week. |
