Show '-,.1,-1; Page Twelve The Springville Herald August 26, 1971 from the Herald files 10 years ago (August 24, 1961) Springville and Mapleton schools will open their doors Monday to register some 3000 boys and girls in the elementary grades and the junior and senior high school. School begins August 31. Orval C. Lowe will be among the 800 graduates to receive degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Frank Patten, principal of the Westside School will receive his Masters at BYU graduation rites Friday. There was no action taken by the city council on the Referendum Petition for the fluoridation of the city water at the regular council meeting Monday evening which means the proposition goes on the ballot to be voted on by Springville taxpayers in the November election. Funeral services were held for William Howard McKenzie, 52, who died Friday at the St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago of a heart condition. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Avondale, Arizona for Elma M. Jensen, 45, a former well-known resident of Mapleton who died of a heart attack at his home. Four advanced piano students will be presented in a recital Sunday afternoon at the Third-Ninth Third-Ninth Ward. They are students of Elaine Puckett. The four are Kay Hanks, Sylvia and Sonia Lynn and Kathie Pabst. The Art City Garden Club is planning another flower show this fall under the direction of Mrs. Rosena Ennis and Mrs. Nima Davidson. Date of the show is September 9. Springville Chamber of Commerce and business men are renewing their request for the 45 degree parking on Main Street. Before the city council makes their final recommendations, recom-mendations, further study will be made. The state favors the parallel parking and will curtail improvement unless this is enforced. David Merrill will be honored by, the Elventh Ward prior to leaving for a mission to England. Dr. Hazel Anderson Lowen-stein Lowen-stein of Terre Haute, Ind. will be honored with an open house given by her mother, Mrs. G. A. Anderson at her home Sunday. Participants will, come from Kolob, Palmyra, Santaquin-Tintic, Nebo and Juab stakes. Eighteen Springville Jaycees converged at the third travel trophy meeting of the year at Bryce Canyon lodge and returned with the trophy. They won by the wide margin of 7308 man-miles "over Cedar City, their nearest competitor who garnered 5304 man-miles. Alma Fullmer of this city was re-elected state commander of the Sons and Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Indian War Veterans at the annaul elections in Spanish Fork. He has headed the organization since 1939 and was the first vice commander before that from 1922 to 1939. Springville City receipts for the year 1950 totaled $335,166 compared to $295,447 for 1949 or an increase of $39,719 according to the audit just released. Funeral services were held in the Fifth Ward Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Belle Wheeler Childs who died Friday of a short illness. Mrs. Mabel Sanford was given final rites at the Eureka Methodist Church. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery here. Funeral services were held Monday here for Mrs. Florence Beesley Brailsford, 45, who died Friday after a two-week illness. Services for Charles M. Gerhart, 66, former resident, were held Wednesday in the Community Church here. Services at the A. Y. Wheeler and Son Mortuary were held for Isaac Dudley Parker, 72, who died Sunday in a salt Lake hospital. David Leon Fullmer will serve a mission to the French mission and will be given a farewell program in the First Ward Sunday. Marsel Tingey and Ronald Allan of the Sixth Ward have returned from their respective missions to England. Cpl. Kenneth L. Russell, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Russell, received his wings upon graduation in the air corps and has been transferred to Randolph Ran-dolph Field, Texas to begin his combat crew training. On the occasion of her seventieth birthday last Thursday, Thurs-day, Mrs. Henrietta Harmer was honored at two events given by .her children, one at the Joe Miller home and later by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Thorn at a garden party. John Hanson, who left last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Goldon Hanson, to reside in Philadelphia, was given a party by a number of friends at Kellys. An informal and well-arranged well-arranged wedding reception was given Sunday at the Scovil home in Mapleton where Sylvia Scovil and Salvatore Tedesce were wed at high noon by father of the bride, precinct judge, Ray Scovil. To prove that there are still fish in Utah lakes and streams, Mr. and Mrs. Bob . Hillis exhibited a 16Vfe lb. Mackinaw trout pulled out recently in the Fish Lake waters. Mr. Hillis claims the prize catch.
